Percy Jackson and the Olympians takes us through a magical world of gods with its fantastic filming locations, and powerful CGI.
Created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, the series follows a 12-year-old demigod Percy, who is accused by Greek god Zeus of stealing his thunderbolt and races to find it.
This new adaptation of Rick Riordan’s beloved book series aims to be more faithful to the novels than the earlier movie versions. Let’s look at the filming locations now!
When and Where was Percy Jackson filmed?
The highly anticipated Percy Jackson and the Olympians series wrapped filming after an eight-month shoot across various locations in the United States and Canada.
Principal shooting began on June 2, 2022 in the Vancouver district of BC, and wrapped on February 3, 2023 under the working title Mink Golden, Comic Book reported.
Simdhari posted an update on the first day of filming in June 2022.
Walker Scobell, the main hero of the show, posted a short video on Instagram to confirm the wrap on Feb 3, 2023.
A large portion of Percy Jackson took place in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The region’s lush rainforests and mountainous terrain made it an ideal backdrop for scenes set at the mythical Camp Half-Blood.
Iconic locations from the novels, like Camp Half-Blood, came to life inside Mammoth Studios and at Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby campus. Scobell shared some winter pics when the shooting was ongoing in Downtown Vancouver.
Goodjohn shared some amazing on-set photos on her Instagram, talking about her wonderful filming experience with Disney+ team and other cast members while shooting for the series. “I made some of my most favorable memories working with this cast,” she wrote in the caption.
Bushnell also shared a few bts pics on his Instagram after he finished shooting for his role in Dec 2022.
New Westminster’s scenic waterfront boardwalks also make appearances along with Westminter Pier Park of British Columbia. An aerial drone was used during the shooting of Gateway Arch scene from The Lighning Thief.
Beyond the Vancouver area, production traveled across North America to film key scenes. Percy Jackson crews also shot on location in New York and Nevada to capture the rich diversity of settings portrayed in Riordan’s mythological world.
Each place added new and unique scenery, from bustling New York City to Nevada’s dry desert landscapes.
Cutting-edge technology also played a role in crafting Riordan’s world for the screen. Industrial Light & Magic’s innovative StageCraft system allowed the creative team to digitally build expansive virtual environments. This revolutionary tool enabled dynamic scenes, like the adrenaline-filled game of capture the flag.
Some of the recent Canadian productions include Miracle in Bethlehem PA, Merry Magic Christmas, and Friends & Family Christmas.
Behind The Scenes
Throughout the complex production process, staying true to the books was a central focus. Lead actor Walker Scobell described how everyone worked tirelessly to adapt the story in a way that thrills both devoted fans and newcomers alike.
The result, successfully captures the “wit, intelligence, diversity, and complexity” that millions of readers fell in love with, he says.
Early reaction indicates that the crew’s ambitious efforts paid off. In a recent interview with SR, executive producers Rick and Rebecca Riordan reflected on both the challenges and triumphs of adapting the first-person fantasy novels into this new television format.
They also remembered actor Lance Reddick’s standout performance as Zeus, prior to the actor’s tragic passing earlier this year. His Zeus will remain part of his legacy.
