Fjord Movie Where to watch, Release Dates, and What You Need to Know

Winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes does not guarantee a film becomes easy to find. Fjord, the new drama from Cristian Mungiu starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, just took home the top prize at the 79th Cannes Film Festival and got a 12-minute standing ovation at its premiere. But it is not in theaters in most countries yet and it is nowhere near a streaming platform. This guide covers what is confirmed about theatrical dates, who holds the rights in your country, and when you can realistically expect it to show up online.

Can you stream Fjord right now?

No. Fjord is not on any streaming platform yet. It just had its world premiere at Cannes in May 2026 and is heading to theaters later this year. There is no confirmed theatrical release date for Fjord in the United States at this point, but it is expected to debut sometime in late 2026.

So if you came here looking for a streaming link, you will have to wait a few months. The good news is this article will tell you exactly when and where to look when the time comes.

What is Fjord about?

Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a mixed Romanian and Norwegian couple who move to the fjord village where the wife was born, along with their children. Their planned new life does not go as expected when they come up against a couple with a very different outlook on life.

Things get messier from there. Cultural differences and local suspicion turn what started as a warm welcome into hostility, and accusations begin to fly that threaten both families and expose how thin the line between trust and fear really is.

At its core the film asks where traditional parenting crosses into coercive control, what communities owe to families who do not share their values, and who gets to decide what is right. Mungiu does not hand you answers. That is kind of the point.

Who made it and who is in it?

Fjord marks director Cristian Mungiu’s English-language debut. It is his first film in three years, following the 2022 drama R.M.N. Mungiu is the Romanian filmmaker who won the Palme d’Or back in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. He is considered one of the sharpest moral voices in contemporary cinema.

The cast includes Sebastian Stan as Mihai, Renate Reinsve as Lisbet, and Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli, and Vanessa Ceban in supporting roles. The film runs 2 hours and 26 minutes and was made on a budget of $4.8 million.

What happened at Cannes?

The competition jury at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, headed by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, gave the Palme d’Or to Fjord. It is the second time Mungiu has won the festival’s top prize.

The film received a 12-minute standing ovation at its world premiere. That is not nothing. Films that go over ten minutes at Cannes tend to have a long life ahead of them on the awards circuit.

This is also the seventh straight Palme d’Or win for Neon, the US distributor behind Fjord. Their winning streak started with Parasite in 2019 and has continued through Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Anora, and It Was Just an Accident.

When does Fjord movie come out in theaters?

The release schedule is staggered by country. Here is where things stand as of May 2026:

CountryDistributorRelease Date
FranceGoodfellasAugust 19, 2026
NorwayGoodfellasSeptember 4, 2026
USANeonLate 2026 (date TBA)
UK and IrelandPicturehouse EntertainmentTBA
Canada, Australia, New ZealandNeonTBA

Picturehouse Entertainment will handle the UK and Ireland release. Neon is releasing in the US. Goodfellas manages international sales.

The US date is the one most people are waiting on. Based on Neon’s history with past Palme winners, a fall theatrical release (September to November) is the most likely window.

When will Fjord be available to stream?

This is where the Neon track record becomes useful. Every Palme d’Or winner Neon has distributed has reached a streaming platform within three to five months of its US theatrical debut. Here is how the past few played out:

FilmUS TheatersStreaming
ParasiteOctober 2019Hulu, April 2020
Anatomy of a FallOctober 2023Max, February 2024
AnoraOctober 2024Max, January 2025
FjordFall 2026 (expected)Early 2027 (expected)

Max is the most likely landing spot when Fjord does hit streaming, given how Neon’s recent titles have been distributed. That said, nothing is confirmed yet and the situation can change.

Is Fjord on Netflix or Prime Video?

Not yet and probably not Netflix. Neon does not have a standing deal with Netflix. Based on recent patterns, Max is the strongest bet for streaming, with a possible digital rental window on Apple TV, Amazon, and Vudu opening up around the same time as or just after any streaming deal.

There is also a chance MUBI picks up rights in certain territories outside the US, as they have done with other arthouse titles in recent years.

What are critics saying?

The reviews are strong, though not without reservation. Some critics find the film thought-provoking but feel it does not quite deliver a blazing truth about the relationships it portrays. Others call it a little bloodless in its final stretch. But the performances and the subject matter have kept people talking.

Deadline called it a fiercely intelligent and gripping movie that finds its power in providing no easy answers, only questions about what is right and what is wrong. Screen Rant noted that the film works because Stan and Reinsve are so committed to the tension of the script.
