Reacher’s best ally just got her own show. And she did not wait for him to show up and save it.
Neagley is the first spinoff in the Reacher universe with eight episodes, all dropping at once, on the same day as the Reacher Season 4 finale. Prime Video made it impossible to miss. Finish one, start the other. It is, by design, the smoothest franchise handoff they could pull off.
But the questions are already flying. Is this just Reacher with a different name? How much of the big man actually shows up? And is it worth your time? Here is everything you need to know.
What is Neagley?
Neagley is a Prime Video action series and the first live-action spinoff in the Reacher franchise. It stars Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, former US Army Master Sergeant, member of the elite 110th Special Investigations Unit, and Jack Reacher’s most trusted ally.
She is now working as a private investigator in Chicago. Her friend Tommy Crane turns up dead on a set of train tracks, apparently by suicide. Neagley does not buy it. She never does.
Her investigation pulls her toward Echo Canyon, a farm on the outskirts of the city that presents itself as a rehabilitation community for people recovering from trauma and addiction. It is, naturally, something far more sinister.
The series was ordered by Prime Video in October 2024. Principal photography began in Toronto on February 18, 2025, and wrapped on June 7, 2025. During production it carried the working title Dutch and Knuckles.
All eight episodes premiered on September 16, 2026 – the exact same day as the Reacher Season 4 finale.

Unlike Reacher, which releases new episodes weekly, all eight episodes of Neagley Season 1 dropped simultaneously on September 16, 2026. It is a full binge-ready season from day one, similar to the rollout strategy Prime Video used for the Bosch spinoff Ballard.

Is Reacher in Neagley? Does Alan Ritchson appear?
Yes, but do not expect him to be everywhere.
Alan Ritchson does appear in Neagley as Jack Reacher, but in a guest-starring role, not a series regular one. The show makes its priorities clear from the beginning. This is Neagley’s story.
The opening of the series reunites Sten and Ritchson on screen in Chicago. Entertainment Weekly’s early access confirmed that the season opens with a scene that brings both characters together, before the story sends Neagley off on her own investigation.

Maria Sten has played Frances Neagley since Reacher Season 1 in 2022. She is Swedish-American and first appeared in the Reacher series as one of the 110th’s elite squad. Neagley became an instant fan favourite – calm, precise, lethal, and quietly complex.
The character lives with haphephobia, an intense aversion to physical touch. It is a detail carried over from the Lee Child novels and it shapes everything about how Frances operates, investigates, and connects with people.
Damon Herriman plays the season’s chief villain, Lawrence Cole. Herriman is known internationally for playing Charles Manson in both Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Mindhunter – his casting here signals the show is playing for creepy, controlled menace rather than brute-force antagonism.
Greyston Holt plays Detective Hudson Riley, the Chicago PD contact who becomes Frances’ reluctant partner. His character carries his own backstory – an attempt to distance himself from a criminal family though critics have noted this subplot is less developed than Neagley’s own arc.

What makes Neagley different from Reacher?
Reacher works because of one very specific thing: a giant nomad walks into a town he has never seen, beats up everyone who deserves it, and leaves. He has no fixed address, no recurring relationships, and no technology beyond a bus ticket and his fists.
Neagley is the opposite. She is rooted. She has an office. She has an assistant. She has a case file system. She has a city she calls home, a relationship with her father, and a childhood she is still working through.
Co-showrunner Nick Santora was direct about this in a July 2026 interview with Entertainment Weekly: “Neagley is not a wanderlust like her pal Reacher. That was probably the biggest fundamental difference.” He and producer Nicholas Wootton also noted they deliberately built “a world around her that was not gonna change each season” – a commitment to continuity that Reacher‘s novel-by-novel structure does not require.
The other difference is tone. Neagley is more of a detective procedural than a brawling action show. It leans into investigation, research, and methodology. The action is still there, the stunt team gave the spinoff its own flavour but the approach is more methodical. Think less bar-fight-in-the-first-ten-minutes, more evidence board and surveillance.
The series is also built around original stories, not adapted from any existing Lee Child or Andrew Child novel. Maria Sten noted this in 2025: “We don’t have additional source material for Neagley. What we’re doing is brand new and original.” This gives the showrunners freedom but also means there is no safety net of a pre-beloved plot.

Do you need to watch Reacher before Neagley?
The short answer is: it helps, but is not strictly required.
Neagley’s character is introduced and contextualised quickly in the spinoff. You do not need to have watched all four seasons of Reacher to follow the plot of Season 1.
That said, watching Reacher first gives you a richer understanding of who she is. Her dynamic with Reacher, her reputation within the 110th, and the emotional weight of her past are all more resonant if you have seen her in action alongside the full cast.
If you want to start fresh, the minimum useful viewing is:
- Reacher Season 1 (introduces Neagley and most of the 110th’s squad)
- Reacher Season 3 (Neagley’s most prominent solo storyline to date)
Season 4 feeds directly into Neagley‘s premiere day, so watching the Season 4 finale immediately before the spinoff is exactly how Prime Video intends the experience.
Neagley Reviews
Critical reception has been mixed-to-positive, with reviewers largely agreeing that the show succeeds as a character study even if it does not match Reacher‘s particular energy.
Collider called it a “Reacher-lite spin-off that’s officially worth your time” – and described it as “a compelling, intimate mystery that will satisfy those who are already Reacher-pilled.” It praised Sten’s performance and her chemistry with the supporting cast, particularly the slow-building dynamic with Greyston Holt’s Detective Riley.
Screen Rant was among the more enthusiastic reviews, calling it a series that “defies expectations by keeping the level of quality that its parent series has had throughout its run.” It highlighted the show’s deeper character focus as a strength and praised its themes of trauma as giving the show an identity distinct from Reacher.
The Wrap described it as “a more emotional show” that “should satisfy detective show fans with its focus on methodology over fisticuffs.” It also praised the stunt team for giving the action sequences their own flavour.
Variety was the most critical major outlet, stating that Frances Neagley “is no Jack Reacher, and therefore the new spinoff is nowhere near as fun to watch as its flagship show.” It acknowledged the first few scenes with Reacher as the most enjoyable in the season, and found the Echo Canyon cult “oddly banal.”

The critical consensus places it as a solid, well-made spinoff that trades in Reacher‘s big swings for a more grounded detective story. How much you enjoy it largely depends on whether you came for the action or for the character.
Will there be a Neagley season 2?
Season 2 has not been officially confirmed as of the September 16 premiere. However, multiple outlets have noted it is “likely” given Prime Video’s investment in the character and the franchise.
The clearest signal is the Zero Margin novel – Lee Child and Yasmin Angoe’s first Neagley book, due in March 2027. If Amazon is backing a standalone novel, a second season follows logically from that commitment.
Reacher Season 5 is already in development, which means both tracks of the franchise will continue running in parallel.
