Widow’s Bay Filming Locations

Rockport, Massachusetts: The Heart of the Show

If you want to visit the closest thing to the real Widow’s Bay, go to Rockport, Massachusetts. Specifically, head to the Bearskin Neck peninsula on the coastline of Cape Ann, where the majority of the exterior scenes were filmed.

Rockport is a small seaside town of about 7,000 people. It is at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula, around 40 miles northeast of Boston.

Rockport is no stranger to film sets either. Bearskin Neck was most famously used in the 2009 film The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, and later in Apple TV’s 2021 Oscar-winner CODA.

The Salty Whale: The exterior of the Salty Whale was filmed at a former art gallery called Dark Star Philosophia on Bearskin Neck, a narrow peninsula in Rockport that has evolved into a lively area filled with small shops, seafood restaurants, and tourists.

White Wharf: One of the first scenes in the show, where Loftis’s teenage son Evan is seen smoking with friends, was shot at White Wharf in Rockport’s old harbor.

How to visit: Rockport is about a 1-hour drive from Boston or reachable by commuter rail. Walk Bearskin Neck for the best feel of the show’s atmosphere.

Gloucester, Massachusetts: The Harbor and the Forest

Lane’s Cove in Gloucester served as the local harbor. It is a landing harbor surrounded by a granite storm wall, and the same spot was also used in the film CODA.

Forest Lane in Gloucester was used for various driving sequences throughout the series.

How to visit: Gloucester is about 30 miles northeast of Boston and easy to reach by car or train.

Essex, Massachusetts: The Fancy Restaurant

The production spent time in Essex at the local Vita Bella Ristorante, which was used as the one fancy restaurant in town that Tom takes a New York Times writer to in the premiere episode.

How to visit: Essex is a short drive from Gloucester and is also known for its antique shops and fried clams

Worcester, Massachusetts: Vincent’s Bar

Vincent’s Bar is where Tom and Patricia talk to Wyck in the show. In real life, it is a long-standing rustic bar in Worcester, known for live music and its famous meatball sandwich.

It is a 20-year-old establishment known for its music scene.

How to visit: Vincent’s Bar is open to the public. Worcester is about 45 miles west of Boston.

Berlin, Massachusetts: The Town Hall

Berlin’s historic Town Hall, dating from 1870, served as Widow’s Bay Town Hall. It is a Greek Revival structure that now operates as a community event venue.

How to visit: Berlin is a small town about 40 miles west of Boston. The building can be seen from outside.

Maynard, Massachusetts: The Widow’s Bay Inn

The exterior of the Widow’s Bay Inn was filmed at Lorenzo Maynard’s mansion, a Second Empire-style house in Maynard, about 25 miles northwest of Boston. Built in 1873, it was once a symbol of the town’s industrial elite. Today, the house has been split into apartment units.

Note: Since this is a private residence, please admire it from the street only.

Sudbury, Massachusetts: The Church

The Widow’s Bay church is Martha-Mary Chapel, a small white-clapboard chapel built in 1940 by Henry Ford on the grounds of Longfellow’s Wayside Inn in Sudbury.

How to visit: The chapel is on the grounds of the historic Longfellow’s Wayside Inn, which is open to visitors and is one of the oldest operating inns in the United States.

Is Widow’s Bay a real place?

No. The town of Widow’s Bay does not actually exist. But the good news is that the real locations used to create it are very much real, and most of them are open to visitors.

Showrunner Katie Dippold was intentional about keeping the island’s location vague. She explained: “It’s a long ferry ride, you don’t know exactly if the ferry comes from Massachusetts or Maine, but I purposely wanted to keep that a little vague.”

Her goal was to tap into the overall New England atmosphere rather than pin it to a specific place.

What the cast said about filming in Massachusetts?

The cast clearly loved shooting in Massachusetts.

Actor Stephen Root, who plays the salty townie Wyck, called the Bay State filming locations “gorgeous” and revealed that he and Matthew Rhys spent a lot of time enjoying the local seafood. “It was all about oysters,” Root joked.

For Rhys, the Massachusetts setting did more than just look good. “There’s certainly a grittiness and saltiness that’s just intrinsic in Massachusetts that lent itself to those more humorous moments, without question,” said Rhys. “So that was a beautiful added bonus.”

Final Thoughts

Widow’s Bay pulls off something that a lot of shows try and fail to do: it makes its setting feel like a living, breathing character. The Massachusetts locations helped the cast and crew tap into real New England history and local horror lore, giving the show a grounded atmosphere that is hard to fake.

Whether you want to walk the docks of Bearskin Neck, grab a meatball sandwich at Vincent’s Bar, or just soak in that foggy Cape Ann air, Massachusetts has plenty to offer both fans of the show and first-time visitors alike.

Just maybe do not go alone at night.
