The new HBO miniseries The Regime takes us into the world of a fictional European country led by the eccentric Chancellor Elena Vernham.
It takes place inside the huge, fancy palace where the chancellor (the country’s ruler) lives.
While the palace seems made up, the political satire was actually filmed in real places in Austria and England that are just as grand!
Let’s take a look at the actual shooting locations and some fun nearby spots to visit.
The Regime Filming Locations
The Regime was filmed in Vienna, Austria and various locations across England in early 2023. Principal shooting for the miniseries began in January 2023 and wrapped around April 26, 2023.
The grand Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna served as the fictional palace of Chancellor Elena Vernham, while other scenes were shot at historical sites like the Gartenpalais Liechtenstein and Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.
Vienna, Austria
A lot of the palace scenes were shot in Vienna, the capital of Austria.
One of the main filming location was Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the powerful Habsburg dynasty.
Filming began in January 2023 at the iconic UNESCO World Heritage, originally known as Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn.
Another place they filmed was Gartenpalais Liechtenstein, also called the Garden Palace.
This super decorated palace from the 18th-century manor house, once owned by the princely Liechtenstein family, can be spotted in various interior palace scenes. The state rooms are open for tours.
If you visit Vienna, you can explore 1,441 rooms of Schönbrunn and its sprawling 500-acre gardens. You can continue your imperial journey towards Hofburg, the former imperial palace of Vienna.
London, England, UK
While recreating the grandeur of a European royal court, the production team of The Regime utilized the expansive facilities in London.
A bulk of filming took place at the iconic Titan Studios, a massive 297,352 sq ft complex in West London.
This massive studio provided the production team with the space and resources to bring their vision to life. Its vast area allowed for the creation of elaborate sets and filming environments.
The team also traveled towards western London to visit the Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire.
This 200-acre facility is a former WWII airfield, and has been used in multiple large-scale productions like the Harry Potter movies, Wonder Woman, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Dark Knight, The Beekeeper, Fantastic Beasts Series, Conjuring 3, Jason Bourne, etc.
You can take the iconic studio tour to see the original Hogwarts sets.
Finally, Sheffield Botanical Gardens provided a scenic backdrop for some scenes in the series.
In the Northwest of London, the spectacular Wentworth Woodhouse manor in South Yorkshire hosted many of the luxurious interior palace scenes.
With the UK’s longest façade at 606 feet and over 300 rooms, it was the ideal double for the Chancellor’s royal residence. You can tour this stunning Baroque architectural masterpiece.
