Based on Rufi Thorpe’s bestselling 2024 novel of the same name, the series follows Margo Millet, a 20-year-old college dropout and aspiring writer who gets pregnant by her married English professor and suddenly finds herself alone with a newborn, a stack of unpaid bills, and very few good options left. Her solution? Launch an OnlyFans account.

What starts as desperation slowly becomes something more calculated and surprisingly successful, especially after her estranged father, a former pro wrestler named Jinx comes back into her life and turns out to be exactly the unconventional life coach she didn’t know she needed.

It is a comedy-drama produced by A24 and created by David E. Kelley, the showrunner behind Big Little Lies and The Undoing. The show does not shy away from its premise, but it handles it with warmth and humor rather than shock value, which is probably why critics have responded to it the way they have.

What Critics are saying about Margo’s Got Money Troubles?

The show has been broadly well received, though a small minority of critics feel the adaptation does not fully follow through on the complexity of its premise.

The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus reads: “Rich in character and dramatic antics, Margo’s Got Money Troubles succeeds because of its attention to emotional detail, authentic performances, and brilliant storytelling.” Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 79 out of 100 based on 27 critics, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.

Critics have described the series as “innovative, honest, intuitive, and effervescent,” with others praising Fanning’s performance for bringing “supremely motherly Margo to life, brilliantly.”

RogerEbert.com called Margo’s Got Money Troubles a “wickedly funny, sex-forward adaptation” and one of the most engaging and entertaining series of the year to date, particularly highlighting Nicole Kidman’s turn as a former pro wrestler-turned-attorney described as “probably the most well-adjusted among the characters,” and Marcia Gay Harden’s scene-stealing role as a ruthless mother who “looks and sounds like a SoCal Cruella de Vil.”

NPR noted that while the show is fanciful in premise, the ramifications of Margo’s choices are treated with real weight, she experiences shaming, regret, and legal troubles, making it as realistic as it is entertaining.

Variety was more measured, arguing that despite a convincing turn from Offerman, the series “never quite delivers an authentic portrait of a determined young mom who uses sex work as a move toward financial freedom,” with Pfeiffer described as “almost too elegant” for the role of Shyanne.
