What Happens in The Watcher?
Dean and Nora Brannock put all of their savings into a large house in a quiet New Jersey suburb. They move in with their two kids, Carter and Ellie. Almost right away, a letter arrives. It is signed by someone who calls himself The Watcher.
Each episode focuses on a new suspect. Could it be Pearl, the strange older neighbor who acts like she owns the street? Or her creepy brother Jasper, who keeps showing up inside the house uninvited? What about the nosy couple next door, Mitch and Mo, who seem to know far too much about the neighborhood?
Then there is Karen, the realtor played by Jennifer Coolidge, who is more interested in selling the house again than helping the family. And there is John Graff, a former owner of the house who vanished under dark circumstances.

Dean drives back to the old house on his own. He watches the new family who has moved in. Honest Review: Is The Watcher Worth Watching?
Here is the straight answer: The Watcher has a great concept and a cast that is hard to beat. But the show loses its way badly after the first two or three episodes.
The first few episodes do a solid job of building tension. The idea of a stalker sending letters to a family in their new home is genuinely creepy. The cast makes the most of what they are given. Bobby Cannavale is convincing as a man slowly falling apart. Naomi Watts holds the family together even as everything around her falls apart. Noma Dumezweni as the private investigator is a clear highlight of the whole show.
Jennifer Coolidge as Karen is worth watching for her alone. She calls the ferret everything but a ferret. She shows up when you least expect her. She is the fun part of a show that takes itself very seriously.
But here is the problem. The writing falls apart. Plot lines appear and disappear without any explanation. Characters make decisions that no real person would ever make. The daughter’s storyline involves so many bad choices that it becomes hard to watch. The cult storyline, the underground tunnels, and the John Graff mystery all build up to nothing.
The show also follows the same pattern in almost every episode. Dean suspects someone. He follows them. They deny it. A bit of evidence appears that makes them seem innocent. Repeat. By episode four or five, this gets very tiring.
The ending is the biggest complaint. After seven episodes of buildup, there is no payoff. The Watcher is never found. No story thread gets tied up in a satisfying way. Viewers who stuck with it until the end were left with nothing but frustration.
