What is Over Your Dead Body About?

Miserable couple Dan and Lisa retreat to a remote cabin for a romantic reset. Each of them arrives with a secret plan to kill the other. Their carefully plotted traps and counterplots quickly unravel when strangers crash the weekend with plans of their own. As the toxic getaway spirals into chaotic carnage, Dan and Lisa must figure out if they want to save their marriage or survive it.

In more detail, the unhappy couple have let years of slights, infidelities, and financial mistakes push them toward plans for murder. They are in crushing debt, so even a divorce would not fully rid them of each other.

What starts as a twisted domestic thriller escalates further when escaped convicts and a Stockholm syndrome victim corrections officer crash the party. The result is a film that keeps finding new floors to drop through, in the best possible way.

The Film’s Background: From Norwegian Cabin to Hollywood

Over Your Dead Body is an English language remake of the 2021 film The Trip. In April 2021, an English version adaptation was officially put into development with Tommy Wirkola attached to direct. By November 2024, Wirkola was no longer directing the film. Jorma Taccone stepped in as director, with Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney writing the screenplay.

The original Norwegian film starred Noomi Rapace and was directed by Wirkola, who is best known for Dead Snow and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. Taccone’s version transplants the story into an English language context with a distinctly American brand of dark comedy.

Principal photography began on November 19, 2024, in Tampere, Finland. The remote cabin used for filming was located in Siivikkala, Ylöjärvi. Despite being a Hollywood production, the film kept the Nordic wilderness setting of the original, which gives the movie much of its wintry and claustrophobic tension.

In May 2025, the film was retitled to Over Your Dead Body. Independent Film Company and Amazon Prime Video acquired US and international distribution rights respectively.

Director: Jorma Taccone

If the name Jorma Taccone does not immediately ring a bell, his body of work definitely will. Taccone is one third of The Lonely Island, the comedy trio behind “Lazy Sunday,” “I’m on a Boat,” and a string of iconic SNL digital shorts. As a filmmaker, he directed MacGruber (2010) and co-directed Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016). His style sits at the intersection of absurdist comedy and genre filmmaking, which makes Over Your Dead Body a natural fit.

The film carries his signature. It features some utterly shocking and grotesquely astonishing gore and practical effects. These go beyond severe stab wounds and shotgun blasts. Bullets are doing things here that probably defy physics, but do so in a way that feels completely fresh.

The involvement of David Leitch and Kelly McCormick through 87North Productions is worth noting. Leitch directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy. He has built a career making action films with a comedic edge and serious craft behind the stunt work. That approach shows directly in Over Your Dead Body, which reportedly features practical effects and action sequences that punch well above the film’s budget class.

What Critics Are Saying about Over Your Dead Body?

Over Your Dead Body premiered at SXSW on March 14, 2026. On Rotten Tomatoes, 70% of 46 critics’ reviews are positive. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus describes the film as blending tense thrills and playful twists with Hitchcockian flair, inventive gore, and strong performances into a satisfying, if occasionally conventional, ride.

Here is a snapshot of what individual critics have said.

The Hollywood Reporter (Angie Han): It comes as a slight disappointment when the film transitions into a relatively straightforward battle for survival. But at least straightforward, in this case, still means packed with playful punches.

Next Best Picture (Dan Bayer): This is not a film for the faint of heart, but then, marriage is not for the faint of heart either. As Over Your Dead Body makes hilariously clear, the couple that fights together stays together.

Flickering Myth: It is crowd-pleasing with a fittingly mean-spirited sense of humor. The film also concludes with a cutting satire of the visual aesthetics of streaming films, making it worth a watch for that alone.

FandomWire (Sean Boelman): Over Your Dead Body is rather uneven but has enough funny and disturbing moments to be mostly effective as a dark comedy.

Awards Buzz (Abe Friedtanzer): Weaving and Segel make the film’s first third absolutely compelling, and watching them hurl insults at each other while trying to finish the job would have undoubtedly been more than sufficiently fun on its own.

The recurring themes in critical coverage are clear and the lead performances are widely praised, the gore is legitimately shocking. The film stumbles slightly when it shifts from domestic dark comedy into full-blown action thriller. Most critics still recommend it, particularly for fans of the genre.

The Original: The Trip (2021)

For context on what Taccone was adapting, the original Norwegian film The Trip was directed by Tommy Wirkola. It starred Noomi Rapace from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Aksel Hennie. It was a darkly comedic horror thriller with a similar premise. A couple on a remote getaway, each secretly planning to murder the other, whose plans are derailed by violent external intruders.

The 2021 original was well received on Netflix internationally and developed a cult following. The Taccone remake shares its structural foundation but adds a distinctly American comedic sensibility. It also ramps up both the practical gore and the slapstick elements. If you enjoy Over Your Dead Body, seeking out the Norwegian original on Netflix is highly recommended.

Is It Worth Watching?

If you enjoy dark comedies with genuine stakes, practical action, a charismatic lead duo, and humor that sits in morally uncomfortable territory, the answer is yes. Critics note that once the film turns into a home invasion thriller, it becomes more sadistic than hilarious. It is worth going in with that expectation in mind. This is not a gentle rom-com with a twist. It is a genuinely violent and frequently very funny film with some tonal whiplash built in.

For fans of films like Ready or Not, Game Night, Knives Out, or The Trip, it sits comfortably in that category of couples at each other’s throats, literally. The chemistry between Segel and Weaving alone is worth the price of admission.
