Sheriff Country looks like California, feels like California, and is set in California, but here’s the thing: not a single frame was actually filmed there. The CBS hit that premiered in October 2025 and was already renewed for Season 2 is entirely made in Ontario, Canada, disguised across multiple cities in the Greater Toronto Area.
And the reason why reveals something fascinating about how modern TV productions actually work. It’s not just about money (though that matters). It’s about one actress’s request to stay close to her family that ended up reshaping the entire show’s production. Here’s where every scene was filmed, what each location stands in for, and why the production chose the Toronto area over sunny California.
Where was Sheriff Country Filmed?
| Location | Province / Region | Role in the Show |
| Milton, Ontario | Greater Toronto Area | Main stand-in for Edgewater’s downtown |
| Brampton, Ontario | Greater Toronto Area | Mickey’s house, courthouse, neighborhoods |
| Hamilton, Ontario | Southern Ontario | City hall, fire station, school scenes |
| Mississauga, Ontario | Greater Toronto Area | Hospital scenes, drug chase, film studio |
| Oakville, Ontario | Greater Toronto Area | Various Edgewater scenes |
| Lowville, Ontario | Near Burlington | Edgewater County Sheriff’s Office exterior |
| Kleinburg / Vaughan, Ontario | North of Toronto | Interior sets at Kleinburg Film Studios |
| Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario | York Region | Additional key scenes |
| Langley, British Columbia | Metro Vancouver | Smokey’s Tavern exterior |
Filming started on May 14, 2025, and ran through January 30, 2026.
Why is Sheriff Country filmed in Ontario and not California?
The show is set in California but made entirely in Canada. There are two main reasons for this.
Cost
Canada, and Ontario in particular, is significantly cheaper to film in than California. The region is known as “Hollywood North” because so many American productions are made there. Canadian cities offer tax incentives, lower crew costs, and flexible permits that make the math work for a TV budget.
Morena Baccarin’s Location
This is the more interesting reason. Sheriff Country is a spin-off of Fire Country, which is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Baccarin lives in New York City, and Vancouver is a five-hour flight from there. That would make it very hard for her to see her family during a long shooting schedule.
CBS agreed to film in Ontario so that Baccarin could travel home on weekends, as it is approximately five hours closer than Vancouver. Ontario sits between New York and Vancouver, making weekend trips home possible.
So the entire production moved to Toronto specifically to keep Baccarin close to her family. That is a big reason why the show feels like it has a slightly different look from Fire Country, even though both are set in the same fictional town.
Sheriff Country Filming Locations
Milton, Ontario – The Heart of Edgewater
Milton is the most important filming location in the entire show. The main street area in Edgewater is shot in Milton, about 25 miles from Toronto.
Some of the streets covered in Milton during filming include Mary Street, James Street, Main Street, Brown Street, Mill Street, and more.
Here are the specific Milton locations and what they were used for:
| Milton Location | Scene / Purpose |
| Main Street | Downtown Edgewater street scenes |
| James Street and Main Street intersection | Police chase scene |
| Mill Street and Rotary Park | Car crash scene (filmed late August 2025) |
| Municipal Lot #1 (Main St E and Brown St) | Farmers’ market scene |
| Knox Presbyterian Church, 170 Main Street East | Church scenes |
| St. Paul’s United Church | Various church scenes; bell tower in promo shots |
| Chudleigh’s Blossom Café, Main Street | Scene introducing Skye Fox (played by Amanda Arcuri) |
| Real estate agency on Martin Street | Edgewater Redwoods Bank (Episode 3, “The Sixth Man”) |
In August 2025, roughly 140 film crew members were on scene in downtown Milton for a full day of shooting. The farmers’ market scene used vendors from the real Saturday Milton Farmers’ Market.
Note: The mountains you see in the background of Milton scenes are not real. The tall background mountains were digitally added via CGI. Milton is flat. The CGI was added to give it that Northern California mountain-town feel.

Brampton, Ontario – Mickey’s House and the Courthouse
Brampton is the second most used location in the show. It sits about 30 miles from downtown Toronto.
Three major things from the show were filmed in Brampton:
Mickey’s Yellow House
Mickey’s yellow house is located in downtown Brampton. The same house was also used in the HBO Max horror series IT: Welcome to Derry, which was likewise filmed in Ontario.
Edgewater County Courthouse
The Edgewater County Courthouse in the fourth episode, “Out of Office,” is actually the Peel Art Gallery in Brampton. The Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) is located at 9 Wellington Street East, Brampton. The building was originally a 19th-century courthouse and jail, which makes it a very fitting choice for a courthouse scene in the show.
Children’s Family Home
The children’s family home is a detached house in Brampton, Ontario.
Lowville, Ontario – The Sheriff’s Office
The exterior of the Edgewater County Sheriff’s Office is not in Milton or Brampton. It is actually the Halton Conservation building in Lowville, a small rural village near Burlington, Ontario, just south of Milton.
The building sits in a quiet, green setting that fits the look of a small-town California sheriff’s department.
Hamilton, Ontario – City Hall, Fire Station, and More
Hamilton is a port city in southern Ontario, located on the western tip of Lake Ontario. It is nicknamed “The City of Waterfalls” and “The Steel City.” It is also one of the most popular filming cities in Canada.
Some of the Hamilton landmarks featured in Sheriff Country include Hamilton City Hall, Central Fire Station, Dundurn Castle, and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.
Hamilton was also used for school and neighborhood scenes, including a high school setting used in a subplot connected to Sheriff Fox’s investigations.
Mississauga, Ontario – Hospital and Drug Chase Scenes
Mississauga is a large city just west of Toronto. It was used for two different types of scenes in Sheriff Country:
- Hospital scenes – filmed at a studio facility in the city
- Drug chase scenes – filmed on Mississauga streets in October 2025
The Long Ridge Motel is represented by the Fort York Motel in Mississauga, a location also used in Cross and Reacher.
Oakville, Ontario – More of Edgewater
Oakville is a town in southern Ontario, right between Mississauga and Hamilton. Oakville was transformed into Edgewater for several scenes. It has older residential streets and a charming downtown that can pass as a small California town.
Kleinburg Film Studios, Vaughan, Ontario – Interior Sets
A lot of what you see inside the show is not filmed at real locations. The grounds and inside sets of Kleinburg Film Studios near Vaughan were used for various frames.
This includes the interior of the police station, Mickey’s house interiors, and the inside of Smokey’s Tavern. All of these are built sets on soundstages.
The inside of the police station, Mickey’s house, and the diner where the sheriff’s department gathers, are all shot on a soundstage.
Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario – Additional Scenes
The town of Whitchurch-Stouffville also hosted the production of multiple key portions of the series. This town is located in York Region, northeast of Toronto. It has a quiet, rural character that fits the show’s small-town setting.
Langley, British Columbia – Smokey’s Tavern Exterior
Here is a location that is not even in Ontario. The exterior of Smokey’s Tavern, where Skye meets firefighter Bode Leone from Fire Country, was filmed at the Trading Post Eatery in Langley, British Columbia.
The interior was created as a set in the studios, while the exterior is the Trading Post Eatery in Langley. This makes sense since Fire Country, which Bode Leone comes from, is filmed in Vancouver. Using a location in British Columbia kept continuity with that show’s world.

Final Thoughts
Sheriff Country is a good example of how modern TV productions work. The show is set in sunny Northern California but made entirely in Canadian cities that are dressed up to look the part. Milton handles the small-town main street feel. Brampton gives them homes and a courthouse. Hamilton adds civic buildings and variety. And Toronto studios handle everything you see indoors.
The reason for all of this is a mix of budget and Morena Baccarin’s personal situation. She wanted to stay close to her New York family, and Ontario made that possible. It was a smart compromise that kept the show moving forward.
With Season 2 already confirmed, the Ontario locations will be back on screen again soon. If you are a fan and want to visit, Milton’s Main Street and the Peel Art Gallery in Brampton are two of the most accessible and rewarding spots to check out.
Sheriff Country airs on CBS on Fridays at 8/7c and streams on Paramount+ the following day.
