The 2024 Paramount+ show “A Gentleman in Moscow” takes viewers on a journey through time and place with its wonderful filming locations.
Created by Ben Vanstone and Nessah Muthy, the historical drama series follows the story of aristocrat Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, as he spends decades of banishment after being placed on house arrest.
While the story itself unfolds in Russia, the filming actually happened in a few different spots. Let’s break down the actual filming locations.

A Gentlemen in Moscow was filmed on location in various places around England, UK, including Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Halifax, and Leeds. Some of the shooting was also done in Moscow, Russia itself.
Principal photography began on 27 February 2023 and wrapped up in January 2024, with a brief pause due to SAG-AFTRA strike in July 2023.
Greater Manchester, England, United Kingdom
Production team used the Bolton Town Hall on Victoria Square to stand in for the Kremlin in Russia. They even sprayed fake snow to make it look like 1920s Russia.
Filming of the UK drama series A Gentleman in Moscow began outside of Bolton Town Hall on 27 February 2023, per the report of The Bolton News.
Moreover, they filmed some scenes at Victoria Hall at 37 Knowsley Street in Bolton, Heaton Park on Sheepfoot Lane in Manchester, and Le Mans Crescent.
Scenes of Royce’s dramatic court escape were filmed at the former Bolton magistrates’ court on Le Mans Crescent and beside the former police station next door, per Manchester Evening News.
Space Studios on Vaughan Street was another big filming spot used in the shooting of A Gentleman in Moscow. This special place is built just for making movies and TV shows, and has everything a production needs.
It has six sound stages, workshops, production offices and stuff like super-fast WiFi, parking lots, cooling systems and makeup rooms.
England has been a popular shooting location for many popular films and TV shows, some of the recent productions include 3 Body Problem, Napoleon movie, The Regime, Criminal Record, The Beekeeper, etc.
Liverpool, England, UK
In June 2023, they shot around the Liverpool Town Hall. This historic building is located on High Street in Liverpool. This place doubled as Paris in the show.
Halifax, England, UK
They also used the Halifax Town Hall, which is an old, protected building in the town of Halifax, West Yorkshire to film some portions of the historic drama series.
Leeds, England, UK
Another key filming site for A Gentleman in Moscow was the Leeds Civic Hall, a municipal building situated in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
Moscow, Russia
Since the story happens mostly in Moscow, they had to film some parts actually in Russia’s capital city of Moscow.
The actor Ewan McGregor talked about how important it was to have an intimacy coordinator for any intimate scenes, just like you’d have a choreographer for dances.
This helper makes sure everything is proper for the actors and crew during those sensitive scenes.
Behind The Scenes
Writer Amor Towles wanted everything on set to look as real as possible, even the little details. He believed this would make the show richer and help the actors feel like they were truly in Russia during the 1920s.
Actor Ewan McGregor thinks it’s important to have an “intimacy coordinator” on set for certain scenes. This person helps make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable during filming. That’s pretty cool!
