About Whalefall

Whalefall is a survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield, known for Spontaneous (2020) and No One Will Save You (2023). Based on Daniel Kraus’s bestselling 2023 novel of the same name, the film follows a diver who is swallowed by a sperm whale while searching for his father’s remains.

The story centers on Jay Gardiner, who has just one hour of oxygen to escape the whale’s body. Trapped in a seemingly impossible situation, he must draw on the lessons his father taught him to survive.

The film combines claustrophobic survival horror with an emotional father-son story, exploring grief, family relationships, and the instinct to stay alive.

How to book: 20th Century Studios points US viewers to Fandango. Most major chains, including Cinemark, Harkins and Marcus, are showing it. In Australia, it’s playing at Hoyts, Event, Palace, Reading and Dendy.

Catch it soon: After a soft opening weekend, Whalefall may not stay on big screens for long. If you want the full underwater experience, don’t wait too many weeks.

When will Whalefall stream on Hulu and Disney+?

The best estimate is late January to early February 2027. Disney hasn’t announced a date. But as a 20th Century Studios film, Whalefall is expected to stream on Hulu in the US and on Disney+ in other countries.

There’s already a strong clue. Hulu and Disney+ subscribers can stream a Whalefall “Special Look” preview today, which points to where the full film will land.

Disney films usually reach streaming about three months after cinemas. From an October 16 release, that lands around mid-January to early February.

US tip: Hulu titles also appear inside the Disney+ app for subscribers on a Disney+ and Hulu bundle.

Fun fact: Brian Duffield’s previous film, the 2023 alien thriller No One Will Save You, skipped cinemas and premiered straight on Hulu. Whalefall got the big-screen release first.

Is Whalefall on Netflix or Prime Video?

No. It’s not on Netflix or Prime Video, and as a Disney-owned film it isn’t expected to stream there. Prime Video and Apple TV should only offer it as a paid rental or purchase.

When Can You Rent or Buy Whalefall?

Most likely between late November and mid-December 2026. Disney hasn’t set a date. Its films typically reach digital stores 45 to 60 days after cinemas, which points to early December.

Where it should appear: Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home (Vudu) and Google Play, as a paid rental or purchase. Renting costs extra, even if you subscribe to Hulu or Disney+.

A soft box office run can shorten that wait. Whalefall’s below-forecast opening could mean an earlier digital date.

Blu-ray and 4K

No disc release has been announced. Physical editions usually follow a few weeks after digital, so early 2027 is a reasonable guess.

Where to Watch Whalefall Outside the US?

Whalefall opened in 51 international markets on the same weekend as the US. Outside the US, its streaming home is expected to be Disney+, though no date is confirmed.

Is Whalefall Based on a Book?

Yes. It adapts Daniel Kraus’s 2023 bestselling novel Whalefall. Kraus co-wrote the screenplay with director Brian Duffield. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment produced, after buying the film rights before the book was even published.

Filming began in Los Angeles in June 2025, with scenes also shot on the Monterey Peninsula.
