Yes, the Apple TV+ series Crowded Room is based on the real life of a criminal named Billy Milligan, the first person in the US history acquitted of a major crime, according to Wikipedia.
Billy was originally from Ohio and he was active in the world of crime since his college days. He committed several crimes within the Ohio State University Campus that gave him a popular name, The Campus Rapist.
He was born to William Stanley Morrison in Miami Beach, his father was supportive but after his parents divorce, he got a new stepfather Chalmer, who abused him badly.
Chalmer was presented before the court in 1977 and was charged for raping three women on the University Campus. During the investigation, it was found that Milligan had ten different personalities.
After a decade of treatment, Billy was released from the prison in 1988. He was also discharged from the Ohio mental health system and was acquitted of criminal charges in 1991. Then, everyone who belong to him move on in their life leaving Billy behind.
