Chupa is Netfilx’s latest fantasy adventure film directed by Mexican filmmaker Jonas Cuaron from the screenplay of Marcus Rinehart, Sean Kennedy Moore, and Joe Barnathan.
The story is also given by the screenplay writers along with Bredan Bellomo while the movie has been produced by 26th Street Pictures.
Based on a Mexican mythological creature called Chupacabra, the movie follows a 13-year-old Alex who flies to Mexico to see his family for the first time since his father died and discovers a mysterious creature in his Mexican town.

Chupa Filming Locations
The Chupa movie was filmed across various locations in New Mexico, United States. According to Abq Journal, the filming began on 23 August 2021 and ended on 29 November 2021.
The US state of New Mexico has always been a popular filming destination for various TV shows and blockbuster Hollywood movies like Breaking Bad, Paradise Highway, The Avengers, Stranger Things, We’re the Millers, Better Call Saul, etc.

Mesilla, Doña Ana County
The town of Mesilla was founded in 1850s and has still retained its charm. That’s why, the historic town was transformed into a stunning place that was used in the filming.
There is a scene where we are shown a ranch where Alex reunites with his family and discover a Chupacabra cub, that place is located around the same town of Dona Ana Country.
Other than that, the Messila Plaza was used to shoot some scenes and residents will be able to identity the remarkable historic building that was also used in the filming of Young Guns II (1990) and Hang ’em High (1968).
Albuquerque, New Mexico
The highly populated and most popular filming location of New Mexico is Albuquerque. It was used to shoot some of the street scenes and the market where Alex buys a chupacabra figurine.
Production team designed the surroundings to look like San Javier, the fictional town where the mysterious creature is first discovered by scientist Quinn. The Rio Grande valley has been featured in the film along with the river.
Rio Grande is the 5th longest river of North American that shares the border between the United States and Mexico. It is known for its astonishing surroundings that provided a suitable backdrop for the film.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe was used to film several interior scenes including the government agency where Richard Quinn works. The Museum Hill, Bandelier National Monument, and the Valles Caldera are some landmarks that can be recognized while watching the movie.
The production team built a set outside the historic Santa Fe Plaza that is itself home to many landmarks like the Palace of the Governors which was also utilized for filming purposes.
Behind the Scenes
Several cast members shared that a studio was used to film some scenes and the Mesi the lead actor, Demian Bichir shared on his social media that the studio was a great place to work as it provided a comfortable environment for cast and crew.
Evan Whitten talked about how he enjoyed working with the other young cast members like Nickolas Verdugo who is playing the role of Memo. Moreover, all the actors enjoyed working with the Mexican director as it gives a positive message.

What is the Chupa movie about?
The family adventure movie is about a teenage boy named Alex who flies to Mexico to see his extended family for the first time after the death of his father Beto due to cancer. Alex discovers a cute cub of the mysterious Chupacabra while on his journey and befriends him.
Later on, he discovers that his family has a great history with the adorable Chupacabras and the new friend of Alex is directly related to his family. However, there is an evil scientist named Quinn who is planning to hunt this lovable creature.
