The Hallmark Channel’s new Christmas movie A Heidelberg Holiday takes us on a festive journey to two picturesque European cities that perfectly captured the Christmas spirit.
Maclain Nelson has directed this family romance film from his own script, with David M Wulf as the producer, and Jennifer K Griffin as the executive producer.
The film has been produced by Hallmark Media in association with Giganten Film Produktions, a German based production company but where was this movie filmed?
Let’s explore the actual shooting locations where this romance took place!
A Heidelberg Holiday Filming Locations
The feel-good romantic comedy “A Heidelberg Holiday” was filmed on location in the picturesque European cities of Heidelberg, Germany and Belgrade, Serbia during winters 2022.
Principal photography began on Dec 13, 2022 and wrapped on 31 January 2023 inside German state of Baden-Württemberg and Serbia, according to Crew United, the largest European network for filmmakers.
Hallmark Christmas Movies X also tweeted that the movie was shot on location!
The cast and crew spent over six weeks splitting time between the two European locations to finish the production and the wintry weather conditions during filming added a cozy Christmas vibe to the Hallmark movie.
Heidelberg, Germany
Heidelberg is the primary filming location for the holiday film. It’s a charming city in southwest Germany, known for its well-preserved medieval old town, the ruins of Heidelberg Castle, and the iconic Old Bridge.
Filming took place in Heidelberg’s Altstadt (Old Town), showcasing landmarks like the 18th-century Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) on the banks of the Neckar River.
You can easily recognize landmarks like the Old Town Hall and Heidelberg Castle illuminating the city’s enchanting Christmas market. The production team prepared a ground like Christmas Island in the German settting.
Heidelberg Castle
Built in the 13th century as a defensive structure, the Heidelberg castle has been undergone numerous renovations but still, it provided a storybook backdrop in the heartwarming film.
The castle’s crumbling stone walls and archways create a fairy tale feel that transports the lead characters to another time and place.
Altstadt (Old Town)
Hauptstrasse is a picturesque street in the Old Town of Heidelberg, lined with charming half-timbered houses, which dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries.
The street is also home to the Heiliggeistkirche, a beautiful Gothic church that was built in the 14th century, also featured in a few scenes of A Heidelberg Holiday movie.
Some Iconic sites like the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Philosophers’ Walk overlooking the Neckar River also provided idyllic backdrops for the shooting like in Everything Christmas movie.
Heidelberger Studentenkuss
No trip to Heidelberg is complete without tasting a “Heidelberger Studentenkuss” – a milk chocolate candy wrapped in colorful foil.
The movie showcases beloved Heidelberg holiday traditions like the festive Student Kiss chocolates, beautiful Weihnachtsmarkts (Christmas markets), heartwarming concerts, and romantic candlelit strolls along the Neckar River.
Belgrade, Serbia
In addition to Heidelberg, some scenes for A Heidelberg Holiday were also filmed on in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
Belgrade offered producers a different aesthetic to portray other aspects of the story.
Some featured locations include the lively pedestrian area of Knez Mihailova Street, the 19th century Hotel Moskva building, and spots along the Danube River.
Alexandre also posted an update in Jan 2023 while the shooting was going. He also marked location as Belgrade, Serbia.
The use of two European cities gives ‘A Heidelberg Holiday’ a dynamic, multi-dimensional setting. Heidelberg oozes classic Old World Christmas charm while Belgrade provides a more modern metro vibe. Together they make the perfect backdrops for this cross-continental holiday tale.
