Netflix’s A Merry Little Ex-Mas Filming Locations, Cast, Plot

Netflix’s A Merry Little Ex-Mas brings together real snow, real laughs, and a reunion of fan-favorite stars. Directed by Steven Carr (Daddy Day Care) and written by Holly Hester (The Royal Treatment), this feel-good romantic comedy stars Alicia Silverstone, Oliver Hudson, Jameela Jamil, Melissa Joan Hart, and Pierson Fodé.

The movie was filmed between February 3, 2025, and March 12, 2025, in the snowy city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada — a perfect backdrop for the chilly Christmas chaos that unfolds onscreen.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas is produced by Wild Pitch Productions in collaboration with Netflix, and it premieres November 12, 2025, adding yet another must-watch to Netflix’s growing “holiday-verse.”

Where was A Merry Little Ex-Mas filmed?

A Merry Little Ex-Mas was filmed entirely in Toronto, Ontario, between February 3 and March 12, 2025, when the city was blanketed in thick, natural snow – giving the movie its authentic winter look.

Director Steven Carr told Netflix’s Tudum‘:

“We were in bitter cold Canada… chasing the snow. And I couldn’t be happier about that. Instead of Hollywood snow, we had real Canadian snow, three feet deep.”

That “real snow” touch makes Toronto the unsung hero of the film. The production is believed to have used a mix of:

  • Downtown Toronto neighborhoods, transformed into festive small-town streets.
  • Residential homes for Kate’s family house setting.
  • Local studios and backlots, where interior Christmas scenes were shot.

Toronto has long been a favorite destination for Christmas movie productions – with its reliable cold weather, skilled film crews, and holiday-ready architecture. Movies like Single All the Way, The Holiday Calendar, A Royal Icing Christmas, The Knight Before Christmas and Mistletoe Murders, also filmed in the area, and A Merry Little Ex-Mas continues that snowy legacy.

Behind the Scenes

The film’s production took full advantage of Toronto’s authentic winter charm. Shooting in February wasn’t easy – temperatures reportedly dropped below freezing during outdoor scenes. But that didn’t stop the cast from having fun on set.

Melissa Joan Hart and Alicia Silverstone shared snaps from behind the scenes featuring snowball fights, twinkle lights, and cozy on-set coffee breaks. According to Carr, the entire cast embraced the frigid weather:

“It was so cold, but the laughter on set kept everyone warm.”

The team’s dedication to authenticity paid off – with every frame capturing the kind of winter magic that only a real Canadian snowfall can deliver.

The Holiday Dream Team Cast

  • Alicia Silverstone as Kate Clueless (Reptile)
  • Oliver Hudson Everett Scream as (Queens), The Cleaning Lady
  • Jameela Jamil – The Good Place, She-Hulk
  • Melissa Joan Hart – Sabrina the Teenage Witch, No Good Nick
  • Pierson Fodé – The Wrong Paris, Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List

Melissa Joan Hart called the cast “a dream come true,” adding:

“Oliver is one of the funniest men I’ve ever met. Jameela and I hit it off like BFFs immediately. And Alicia? I can’t believe we’d never worked together before!” This behind-the-scenes chemistry is exactly what you’ll feel in every frame – warmth, laughter, and a little chaos that only Christmas family reunions can bring.

Plot

Kate (Alicia Silverstone) is freshly divorced but still determined to give her family one last perfect Christmas before selling her house. Everything seems to be going according to plan… until her ex-husband Everett (Oliver Hudson) shows up with his much-younger girlfriend.

Now, instead of the serene “silent night” she imagined, Kate’s holiday turns into a hilarious, awkward, and emotional snowstorm of nostalgia, rivalry, and rediscovery.

Director Steven Carr describes Kate’s emotional journey best:

“Like George in It’s a Wonderful Life, when something big happens to shake up your life, it changes your point of view — and you realize the life you have is the one you’re meant to have.”

So yes – it’s part comedy, part reflection, and all wrapped up in twinkling lights and tinsel.
