For once, Hallmark didn’t have to rely on a Canadian town to recreate the magic of a European Christmas. A Danish Christmas was filmed in Copenhagen, Denmark, with the city’s real streets, festive decorations and seasonal atmosphere providing the backdrop.
The production’s biggest advantage was having Emilie Ullerup involved as an executive producer. Born and raised in Copenhagen, she wanted the movie to capture the authentic Christmas spirit of her home country rather than recreate it somewhere else.
From the Andersen Inn to Copenhagen’s iconic Christmas landmarks, a Danish Christmas takes viewers into a setting that feels genuinely Danish. Here’s a closer look at the locations and the story behind this unusual Hallmark production.
A Danish Christmas Filming Locations
A Danish Christmas (2026) was filmed primarily on location in Copenhagen, Denmark, during December 2025. The production also filmed at a beautiful old manor house used as the family hotel, and part of the shoot reportedly took place at a farm in Farum, just north of Copenhagen.
Unlike most Hallmark Christmas movies filmed in Canada during summer, this production captured real Danish Christmas scenery, decorations and winter atmosphere.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Unlike many Hallmark Christmas movies, A Danish Christmas was not filmed in a Canadian town during the summer, but was shot on location in Copenhagen.
That is not a small thing. The overwhelming majority of Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas productions are built on the infrastructure of British Columbia and Ontario, crews, stages, small towns that double beautifully for fictional American communities. Sending a production to Copenhagen in December is a different proposition entirely.

The Andersen Inn
The story demanded a real location. Marie, a hotel tech executive, is living in Chicago when she returns to Copenhagen to spend Christmas with her family, and everything about the film’s emotional logic depends on the city feeling genuinely Danish. The inn, the Christmas tour, the concept of hygge itself: none of it lands the same way with a North American backdrop standing in.
Ullerup, who is also an executive producer on the project, saw the film as an opportunity to honor her homeland and share Denmark’s Christmas traditions with Hallmark viewers. “I was honored to share a piece of my home country and excited to be involved creatively to ensure its authenticity,” she declared.
This is not the usual Hallmark production model. This is a lead actress with producing power who pushed for her country to be represented correctly, and then went home to film it.
Copenhagen’s Christmas Landmarks
Ullerup admits that filming a Hallmark movie in the city where she was born and raised was powerful for her. “There were moments when I was overwhelmed with emotion,” she said, noting that filming in some of Copenhagen’s most iconic landmarks while Christmas was in full swing was “truly a full-circle moment.”
She also brought her family along for the ride. Sharp-eyed viewers can be on the lookout for members of Ullerup’s family in various cameos, her mother, sister, nephew, and cousin all appear, with the latter playing her boss in the movie’s opening scene. “Since I rarely get to film near my family,” she said, “I thought, why not bring them along for the fun?”
That is a detail worth knowing before you watch.

Emilie Ullerup
Danish-born Emilie Ullerup is best known to Hallmark viewers as Bree O’Brien from Chesapeake Shores. She has also appeared in several Hallmark films, including Winter Castle and Nature of Love. Her father was a diplomat, he served as Danish ambassador to Vietnam and later to Sweden, which is why she grew up across multiple countries before eventually settling in Vancouver to pursue acting.
She is not just the lead of A Danish Christmas. She is a producer on the film, which is why the production ended up in Copenhagen rather than Burnaby. She earned that creative control, and she used it.
Corey Sevier
Sevier has been building his Hallmark filmography for years. He started acting at age seven as Timmy in the 1990s revival of Lassie and has since become a reliable presence in the genre, acting, and increasingly directing his own projects. He has also starred in several films, including Northern Lights of Christmas, Road Trip Romance, and The Christmas Charade, which he also directed.
He also starred in Pumpkin Regatta Romance just five weeks before A Danish Christmas premieres, which is a remarkable back-to-back for one actor’s Hallmark season.
Ontario vs. Copenhagen
Hallmark films the majority of its Christmas productions in British Columbia and Ontario. The infrastructure is proven, the crews are experienced, and Canadian towns translate beautifully to fictional American small towns on screen.
A Danish Christmas breaks that mold entirely.
| Feature | Ontario/BC Standard | A Danish Christmas |
|---|---|---|
| Filming location | Canada, summer | Copenhagen, December |
| Winter authenticity | Simulated | Actual |
| Lead’s connection to location | Professional | Birthplace |
| Producer involvement | Standard | Lead actress as exec producer |
| Local cast | Canadian actors | Danish actors |
The result is a film that, visually and emotionally, could not have been made anywhere else.
The Plot
Marie escorts Ryan on a carefully curated tour of Copenhagen and pulls out all the stops to create hygge at the inn, though both efforts end in some festive fiascos. Despite the mishaps, the two forge a connection that may be more than just innkeeper and tourist.
When the real travel writer arrives, they realize their mistake, sending Marie into overdrive to ensure Ryan experiences the perfect Danish Christmas. In the process, Marie learns that warmth, connection, and, possibly, romance.
The word at the center of all of it is hygge. “Hygge is difficult to explain because it’s more of a feeling,” Ullerup explained, “and that’s exactly what I wanted audiences to experience.”

Reviews
Pre-premiere buzz of A Danish Christmas has focused heavily on two things: the fact that it was actually filmed in Copenhagen rather than a Canadian stand-in, and Ullerup’s dual role as lead actress and executive producer ensuring the cultural details were handled with genuine care.
The Danish setting and real December filming give it a visual authenticity that is rare in the genre. The hygge framing, warmth and connection as things that happen organically rather than by design, maps neatly onto the Hallmark formula while giving it a specific cultural flavor that distinguishes it from the rest of the Countdown to Christmas lineup.
For viewers who just came from Pumpkin Regatta Romance, watching Corey Sevier swap an Ontario marina for a Copenhagen inn is its own kind of fun.
