Where was The Pitt Filmed? Real Locations Behind the Hit Max Series

The Pitt is an American medical drama television series streaming on Max. Set in the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, the show follows a team of emergency room doctors and nurses through a single 15-hour shift, with each episode depicting one real-time hour of that shift. The series stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby, an experienced attending physician navigating the relentless pace of a modern urban ER.

Created with a focus on procedural authenticity, The Pitt has been praised for its immersive, documentary-like realism. Season 1 premiered in 2025, and the show went on to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

A second season, set on the Fourth of July and following Dr. Langdon’s return from rehabilitation, earned a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and broke viewership records. A third season is currently in production.

That split between California and Pennsylvania is what makes the show look so real. The production team spent months getting both locations right.

The Pitt Filming Locations

While the show is set in Pittsburgh, the majority of filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, where the entire hospital interior was built on a soundstage. Pittsburgh was used only for exterior establishing shots over the course of a few days.

Season 1 filming spanned nearly 150 days, wrapping on February 7, 2025, though production experienced a brief pause in January 2025 due to the Los Angeles wildfires before resuming to complete the rooftop and park finale scenes. Season 2 filming began on June 16, 2025, at the Burbank soundstage, with the production team returning to Pittsburgh in September 2025 to wrap up exterior shoots at Allegheny General Hospital.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the real building behind the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The hospital sits at 320 East North Avenue on the city’s North Side.

During Season 1, the cast and crew spent about three days in Pittsburgh in September 2024. They captured drone footage above the hospital and around the city, and they filmed scenes on the rooftop helipad of the Snyder Pavilion. The front entrance on East North Avenue appears in the show too.

The very first scene of Episode 1 shows Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) walking to work. That shot was filmed on the corner of Cedar Avenue and Suismon Street, just a short walk from Allegheny General. A few seconds later, the camera pulls up for a wide aerial view of Pittsburgh’s skyline.

Candace Herrington, the hospital’s manager of corporate communications, confirmed to CBS that drones captured most of those landscape shots, and the building got new signage reading “Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center” for the shoot.

The real magic of The Pitt filming happened 2,500 miles away from Pittsburgh.

Production designer Nina Ruscio and set decorator Matt Callahan built a full hospital from scratch on a soundstage at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. A crew of 125 people put together a 25-bed emergency room that covers over 20,000 square feet.

The waiting room and the staircase up to the administrative offices sit on a separate soundstage on the same studio lot. The total construction cost came in at around $4 million.

Ruscio did not just invent the look. She visited Allegheny General in person to photograph the building’s details. She matched the marble tile color for the waiting room floor, recreated the marble columns from the hospital’s south entrance on East North Avenue, and used the same brick patterns on the walls.

Set decorator Matt Callahan went one step further by labeling every medical cart drawer with P-touch labels to match what a real ER would use. The result is a set that looks like Allegheny General from the inside, down to small architectural details most viewers would never notice.

Why the crew chose this filming setup?

The Pitt tells its story in real time. Each episode covers one hour of a 15-hour shift. That format means the camera almost never leaves the hospital, so the indoor set needed to be large enough to support a full season of shooting without feeling repetitive.

Ruscio designed the ER set with complete visibility across the floor so cameras could move in any direction without running into a wall. That kind of control is not possible in a working hospital, where patient privacy, active departments, and tight spaces all get in the way.

The Burbank soundstage let the team shoot long, continuous sequences with full lighting control, which is part of why The Pitt feels so immediate and tense.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, gave the show its sense of place. The skyline, the hospital exterior, the streets of the North Side – those few days of location shooting grounded the whole series in a specific city.

Can you visit the filming sites?

If you want to see The Pitt’s real filming location, Allegheny General Hospital is on the North Side of Pittsburgh at 320 East North Avenue. The front entrance and the street corner at Cedar Avenue and Suismon Street are both visible and accessible to the public.

The Warner Bros. Studios lot in Burbank occasionally runs studio tours, but the specific soundstage used for The Pitt is a working production set and not open for public visits.

Where was The Pitt season 2 filmed?

Season 2 filming began on June 16, 2025, at the Burbank soundstage. The production team returned to Pittsburgh in September 2025 to shoot exterior scenes at Allegheny General again, this time with cast and crew in town for about three days.

Executive producer Noah Wyle was present for the Pittsburgh shoot and spoke briefly to local media right after The Pitt won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. Season 2 broke viewership records and earned a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A third season is already in production.

For Season 2, the story picks up on the Fourth of July, following Dr. Langdon’s return to the ER after rehabilitation. The Burbank set was redressed and updated to fit the new shift. Pittsburgh exteriors appear again in establishing shots and outdoor scenes throughout the season.

The Pitt streams on HBO Max.
