A woman who gave up her dream for her husband’s career is handed a Christmas ornament and wakes up in the life she didn’t choose.
That’s the setup of What If Christmas, starring Lori Loughlin and Tom Cavanagh. It is the sixth movie in Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas 2026, and premieres Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 8:00pm ET on Hallmark Channel.
It’s also a personal project for Loughlin, and her first Hallmark holiday movie since 2018’s “Homegrown Christmas” with Victor Webster, she told Decider she spent several years working to bring it to life.
Here’s what we know about where What If Christmas was filmed, who’s in it, and when to watch.

Ontario, Canada
Hallmark hasn’t announced where What If Christmas was shot. As of late September, no director had been announced, and no filming location or dates had been reported.
A few travel sites have since published detailed location lists. One claims the film was shot in Ottawa, with additional work in nearby Almonte, Carleton Place and Manotick.
That site also names Sparks Street and the Fairmont Château Laurier. None of this is backed by a production listing, local news report or cast post, so treat those specific spots with caution.
The more reliable clues still point clearly to Ontario rather than British Columbia.
The strongest evidence is the supporting cast. Hallmark’s official stills show Lori Loughlin, Jonathan Whittaker, Lyla Elliott, Tom Cavanagh, and Marisa McIntyre together. Whittaker is an Ontario stage and screen veteran. He teaches acting at Toronto Film School, studied at Ryerson University in Toronto, and his credits include The Expanse, Murdoch Mysteries and Suits. These are all Toronto-shot productions.
Marisa McIntyre is an even more telling clue. Her previous Hallmark project, True Justice: Family Ties, was filmed entirely in Ottawa, Ontario, in mid-June 2023. Hallmark usually casts supporting roles locally, so this lineup is a strong sign the production was based in Ontario.
There’s one red herring worth mentioning. Loughlin has recently been in British Columbia, but for a different project. She has been in Vancouver filming season 14 of When Calls the Heart, which will premiere in January 2027. That work is separate from What If Christmas.

Ottawa, Almonte & Toronto
If What If Christmas was shot in Ontario, a few places are the usual suspects.
Ottawa. The capital has become one of Hallmark’s busiest Ontario bases. Its grand hotels and historic downtown streets make it a natural fit for a story built around hospital charity galas and a high-end fashion career.
Almonte. This small town in the Ottawa Valley is a Hallmark favourite. For example, Christmas Scavenger Hunt, starring Tom Arnold, was shot there. If the movie needed a cozy small-town street, Almonte is a likely candidate.
Toronto. Toronto regularly stands in for New York in Hallmark movies. A Toronto street was once dressed up for a Hallmark Christmas production, and locals joked online that it was Christmas in New York, complete with snow on Victoria Street in downtown Toronto. Since Erin’s story is set in New York City, Toronto-area city scenes are plausible.
| Possible Location | Why It Fits What If Christmas |
|---|---|
| Ottawa | Elegant hotels and ballrooms suited to charity galas |
| Almonte | Hallmark’s go-to Ottawa Valley small town |
| Toronto | Long track record of doubling for New York City |
None of these is officially confirmed for What If Christmas. They are educated guesses based on the cast and on where Hallmark usually films in Ontario.
Why Ontario works for Hallmark?
Hallmark has leaned on Ontario for years, especially the Ottawa Valley, and the reasons are practical.
According to a production coordinator at Ottawa’s Fireside Pictures, hiring Canadian actors gives local productions access to tax credits that make films more financially feasible. Ottawa’s shift from autumn to winter also matches the picture American viewers have in their minds of the season.
| Feature | Ontario | British Columbia |
|---|---|---|
| Hallmark track record | Growing fast | Industry standard |
| Local acting talent pool | Deep (Toronto, Ottawa) | Very deep |
| “New York” stand-ins | Toronto, downtown Ottawa | Vancouver |
| Christmas Main Streets | Almonte, Port Perry | Fort Langley, Steveston |
For a story that splits its time between a glamorous Manhattan life and a quieter married one, Ontario’s mix of big-city streets and storybook towns is an easy choice.

How does a Hallmark movie fake New York City?
Mostly with clever set dressing.
What If Christmas is set in Manhattan, but very few Hallmark productions actually film there. New York is expensive and difficult to shoot in. Canadian productions usually create the illusion with a few tricks: tight shots of grand building facades, yellow-cab props, holiday window displays, and a couple of establishing shots of the real skyline.
The film’s alternate-reality premise also helps. Erin’s two lives, the supportive surgeon’s wife and the famous fashion designer, need visually distinct worlds. A shared city with contrasting interiors (a warm family home versus a sleek design studio) is how Hallmark typically handles that kind of split.
What is What If Christmas about?
Erin (Loughlin) has spent years supporting the career of her husband Adam (Cavanagh), a heart surgeon. Her main role has been organising his hospital’s Christmas charity galas. But when he moves to a new hospital, her help is no longer needed. Back in New York City and feeling lost, she starts to feel her long-buried regrets about giving up her dream of fashion design.
Then someone gives her an unusual heart-shaped Christmas ornament, and she wakes up in a different life. Hallmark’s logline describes her waking up at Christmas as a world-famous fashion designer in an alternate reality where she never married her husband.
There’s a catch, though. Hallmark’s preview page says that what Erin finds at the top of her career is loneliness.
It’s Hallmark’s take on the classic “road not taken” story, with a Christmas ornament standing in for the magic.
Cast of What If Christmas
| Actor | Character | Known For |
|---|---|---|
| Lori Loughlin | Erin | Full House; When Calls the Heart; Garage Sale Mysteries |
| Tom Cavanagh | Adam | Ed; The Flash; Scrubs |
| Jonathan Whittaker | Not yet announced | The Expanse; Murdoch Mysteries; Loving Christmas |

Lori Loughlin
Few actors have as much Hallmark history. She appeared in the When Calls the Heart pilot movie, played Abigail Stanton for six seasons, and led the Garage Sale Mystery franchise across sixteen films.
2026 marks her full-scale return to the network. Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder Takes the Stage premiered September 19, What If Christmas follows on October 25, and she returns as Abigail Stanton in six episodes of When Calls the Heart.
Tom Cavanagh
Cavanagh brings a lot of TV credibility. He starred in NBC’s Ed, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and spent nine seasons on The CW’s The Flash playing Harrison Wells and many multiversal variants. He’s not entirely new to Hallmark’s world; he previously appeared in Mistletoe Murders Season 1.
The casting is a clever wink to his past roles. As one outlet noted, the movie gives Cavanagh another chance to explore a reality-bending universe. Fans of The Flash will appreciate that.
Behind the Scenes
This movie took a long time to make. Screenwriter Cara J. Russell first showed Loughlin the script about four years ago, when it was written for a younger couple. Loughlin developed it herself and shopped it to different networks until producer Brad Krevoy helped bring it to Hallmark. Loughlin said Julie Sherman Wolfe was then brought in to polish the script and make some changes.
Her own description of the movie is simple: “This one is close to me.”
Loughlin said she had “great chemistry” with Cavanagh from the moment they met. That matters for a story where the couple has to feel like they share decades of history, and where their absence from each other’s lives has to hurt.
Hearties get a double feature. Daniel Lissing’s Forgotten Holiday airs Saturday, followed by Loughlin’s What If Christmas on Sunday. That’s two Christmas movies starring When Calls the Heart alumni on back-to-back nights.
