Netflix’s Below may be set in the fictional outport of Snook’s Arm, but its eerie harbours, rugged coastline and icy waters are real. The six-episode series was filmed across Newfoundland and Labrador, using everything from a working fishing harbour to a marine research centre.
Some locations doubled as the heart of Snook’s Arm, while others helped bring the show’s unsettling ocean mystery to life. Here’s where Below was filmed, including the real harbour behind the fictional town and the Newfoundland locations you can visit yourself.
Below Filming Locations
Below was filmed entirely in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Production ran for about 75 days between July and October 2025. Netflix’s official location map names seven sites across St. John’s, Pouch Cove, Bay Bulls, Brigus South, Harbour Main and Twillingate.
| Town | Key Location | What It’s Known For |
| Brigus South | Brigus South Harbour | The main look of Snook’s Arm |
| Pouch Cove | Marine Park, Heritage Society, Society of United Fishermen Lodge | Pond scenes and the town hall |
| St. John’s (Logy Bay) | Ocean Sciences Centre | Marine research setting |
| Bay Bulls | Pennecon Marine Base | Working waterfront and boats |
| Harbour Main | Rising Tide Convenience | Everyday town life |
| Conception Bay area | Open water off Conception Harbour (reported) | The sinking house |
| Twillingate | Coastline and waters | Icebergs |
Creator Jesse McKeown has visited Newfoundland for years and he always wanted to set a story there.
He describes the island as rugged, isolated and even frightening, but full of warm, funny and eccentric people. Below is built on that contrast.
Josh Hartnett hadn’t read anything set in Newfoundland before Below. He told Netflix he finished the first two scripts in under an hour.
Brigus South Harbour
Brigus South is a tiny community on Newfoundland’s Southern Shore, and its harbour gives the show its weathered, working-outport look.
The production didn’t just film the harbour as it was. In July 2025, the province’s Department of Environment and Climate Change approved temporary fish stages, wharves and other structures there as set dressing.
So some of the stages you see are real and some were added by the art department. Spotting which is which is part of the fun.
Hartnett has said a typical day meant shooting in Brigus South and then driving back to St. John’s.
Visiting tip: This is a working harbour. Visit respectfully and stay clear of active fishing gear.

Pouch Cove: Three Locations in One Town
Pouch Cove, on the northeast Avalon Peninsula, is one of the province’s oldest communities. Below used it three times.
Marine Park (515 Pouch Cove Line). Provincial documents show the production asked to build a temporary wharf on Little Herring Cove Pond, roughly 8 feet by 20 feet. It’s a public park known for its ponds.
Pouch Cove Heritage Society (122 Town Circle). Netflix lists this heritage building on its official map. The specific scenes haven’t been named.
Society of United Fishermen Lodge. This historic fishermen’s hall became a key filming location. Netflix says the production also made improvements to the building, which the community keeps after filming.
Ocean Sciences Centre, St. John’s (Logy Bay)
This location fits the show’s science plot.
The Ocean Sciences Centre on Marine Lab Road is run by Memorial University of Newfoundland. It appears on Netflix’s official filming map. Mackenzie Davis plays a visiting marine researcher in the show, so the facility suits her story.
The building also connects to the show behind the camera. Dr. Annie Mercier, a marine biologist at the centre, advised the production on the science behind its sea creature.
Visiting tip: This is a working research facility. Check public access before you go.

Pennecon Marine Base, Bay Bulls
Bay Bulls sits just south of St. John’s. Its working harbour is tied to Newfoundland’s marine industries.
Netflix lists the Pennecon Marine Base (2 Northside Road) as an official location. With so much of Below happening on boats and docks, a real industrial waterfront was an obvious choice.
Rising Tide Convenience, Harbour Main
This is the most ordinary place on the list.
Rising Tide Convenience, at 305 Conception Bay Highway in Harbour Main, is on Netflix’s official map. Netflix hasn’t said which scene was shot there.
Its inclusion shows how the production built Snook’s Arm out of everyday places, like the corner store, the hall and the wharf.
The Sinking House (Conception Bay)
Remember the opening? A family’s house is towed across the water to a new home, then suddenly dragged under.
McKeown says this was the first image he had for the series. He liked the idea of opening on a family in the middle of a move and then having something terrible happen to them.
According to several location reports, the crew built a real house for the scene and towed it out from Conception Harbour. That means the sinking was at least partly practical, with visual effects added afterward.
Reports also place interior scenes at a local pub called Fureys on Conception Bay Highway. Bacon Cove, also on Conception Bay, is listed among the coastal locations too.
Twillingate
Production also travelled north to Twillingate, on Newfoundland’s northeast coast in Notre Dame Bay.
Twillingate is known for colourful fishing villages, dramatic cliffs and some of the best iceberg viewing in the world. That matters because ice is central to the story’s mystery, and Netflix’s own stills show boats passing massive icebergs.
Visiting tip: Iceberg season usually peaks in late spring and early summer. Boat tours run from the harbour.
Filming on the Real North Atlantic
Some of Below’s sea scenes weren’t done in a tank. The cast actually went out on the ocean.
Charlie Heaton has described working with the Coast Guard, driving boats and kayaking on the open water. Local group Fishing for Success also taught the cast and crew traditional fishing skills, so the boat work would look authentic.
Is Snook’s Arm a real place?
The Snook’s Arm in the show is fictional. Snook’s Arm is also the name of a real community in Notre Dame Bay, but there’s no evidence that any filming happened there. The town you see on screen is mainly Brigus South, with pieces of Pouch Cove, Harbour Main and Conception Bay mixed in.
The Local Impact
Below was a large production for the province.
| Figure | Detail |
| 700+ | Primary cast and crew |
| 425+ | Daily hires and extras |
| 650+ | Vendors used |
| $90M CAD+ (about $65M USD) | Contribution to Canada’s economy, mostly in Newfoundland and Labrador |
Local partners also shaped what you see and hear. Baynoddy Knits and knitters from NONIA handmade the wool sweaters, scarves and mittens worn on screen. The soundtrack features Newfoundland bands Shanneyganock and Salt Beef Junkies.

Behind the Scenes
Hartnett listened every day to a local radio show where fishermen talked about their work, then practised with a dialect coach. The series is brought to life by Toronto VFX studio Mr. X, with scientific input from Dr. Annie Mercier. Heaton spent time in bars outside St. John’s to absorb the local culture.
Where to watch Below?
Below is a Netflix original, and all six episodes have been streaming since October 8, 2026.
It has been a big hit. Below became the most-watched debut ever for a Netflix Canadian title. It reached No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English TV list with 17 million views, ranked No. 1 in 53 countries and made the Top 10 in 90.
Will there be a Below season 2?
