What is Carrie (2026) about?
This new take follows Carrie White, a teenage girl who has long been sheltered from the world by her mother, Margaret. After her father’s sudden death, she starts at a public high school where she confronts bullying that goes viral, the pressure of social media, and the emergence of telekinetic powers she can’t quite master yet.
The series updates the setting to the present day, making social media the primary weapon of psychological torture. Chris launches a viral account called “Carrie Red,” triggering escalating chaos, privacy violations, and violence across the entire student body.
It is a faithful adaptation of the Stephen King novel in spirit while being a genuinely modern story in execution.

Carrie (2026) Reviews
The series holds an 85% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 111 reviews. Audiences have given it a similarly positive 83%. The critical consensus praises Flanagan for bringing more compassion to the familiar story while finding new ways to explore Carrie’s relationships with her classmates and mother.
One reviewer called it “a brilliant masterpiece,” arguing that Flanagan has once again proven himself a true master of horror and the perfect filmmaker to carry on King’s legacy.
Another critic compared it to “an active shooter drill,” saying Mike Flanagan’s eight-part update on a Stephen King classic “hits like a shot in the heart.”
After receiving a stamp of approval from King himself, who called Flanagan the best adapter of his work, the Carrie limited series also enchanted critics and audiences.

| Rotten Tomatoes (Audience) | 82% |
| Metacritic | 72/100 |
How does this compare to previous Carrie adaptations?
This is not a sequel or a continuation of anything. It is a completely standalone series with no connection to the 1976 Brian De Palma film, the 2013 Kimberly Peirce remake, or the 2002 TV movie. The series also lands fifty years after De Palma’s 1976 adaptation, which had long since linked Carrie White to the horror genre.
Flanagan has built an original television series from the ground up using King’s novel as the foundation.
| Adaptation | Year | Format | Director |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrie | 1976 | Film | Brian De Palma |
| Carrie | 2002 | TV Movie | David Carson |
| Carrie | 2013 | Film | Kimberly Peirce |
| Carrie | 2026 | TV Series (8 eps) | Mike Flanagan |
Will there be a Carrie season 2?
Carrie Season 2 has not been officially renewed by Prime Video. Prime Video originally positioned Carrie as an eight-episode limited series, so another season is not something viewers should treat as guaranteed.
The season ends on a massive cliffhanger. Season 1 teases that Carrie is part of a broader community of telekinetic women, which could form the basis of a second season.
If Prime Video does greenlight another season, late 2028 or early 2029 would be a more realistic release window than anything immediate. For now, nothing is confirmed.
