What is The Accountant 2 about?

The Accountant 2 is the follow-up to the 2016 film The Accountant. Ben Affleck returns as Christian Wolff, a math genius with autism who works as an accountant for criminal organizations and is also a highly skilled fighter and sniper.

In this movie, an old friend named Ray King is murdered. The killer leaves behind a message that says “find the accountant,” which pulls Christian back into action. He teams up with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina to find out who did it and why.

To get the job done, Christian also has to call on his estranged brother Brax, played by Jon Bernthal. Brax is a professional hitman, and the two brothers have not been on good terms. Together, they uncover a dangerous network of killers connected to a larger conspiracy.

The movie is directed by Gavin O’Connor, who also directed the first film. The screenplay was written by Bill Dubuque.

Do You Need to Watch the First Movie Before The Accountant 2?

It helps, but it is not required.

The Accountant 2 brings back several characters from the first film and references events that happened in it. If you have not seen the original, you might not fully understand who Ray King is or why Christian and Brax have such a complicated relationship.

That said, the movie does a decent job of giving you enough context to follow along even as a first-time viewer.

For the best experience, watch the first film before this one. The original Accountant is also available on Amazon Prime Video, so you can watch both back to back.

  2. The Accountant 2 (2025)

Is The Accountant 2 Worth Watching?

The Accountant 2 is a solid action thriller that most viewers enjoy, even if it does not quite live up to the first movie for some fans.

The biggest thing people like is the chemistry between Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. Critics called it a buddy movie that brings more humor than the first film. The Guardian said it was more fun than its predecessor. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 75% score from critics, which is higher than the first movie earned.

Some fans felt the tone was too different from the original. The first movie was darker and more focused on Christian using math to solve problems. The sequel is lighter and more action-heavy. A few viewers also thought the villain was weak and that certain plot points did not make much sense.

Here is a quick breakdown:

What WorksWhat Could Be Better
Great chemistry between Affleck and BernthalLighter tone that does not match the first film
Good action scenesVillain feels thin and not very scary
More humor than the first movieLess focus on the “accountant” doing actual accounting
Solid performances from the whole castSome plot holes and story gaps
Good pacing for an action movieA few character changes that fans of the first film noticed

If you liked the first Accountant, it is worth watching. Just go in knowing it is more of a buddy action comedy this time around than a serious crime thriller.

Will There Be an Accountant 3?

Yes. Director Gavin O’Connor confirmed in April 2025 that a third film is already in development. He has described the plan from the start as a trilogy.

O’Connor said the third film will follow Christian and Braxton on a road trip together. He called it “Rain Man on steroids” and said it will have a lighter tone with more emotional depth between the brothers. Anna Kendrick is expected to return as Dana Cummings from the first film.

No release date has been set for The Accountant 3 yet.
