Created and written by Noah Hawley, Fargo is a dark comedy series, inspired by the 1996 film of the same name written and directed by the Coen brothers.
Five seasons of this anthology series have been released so far, and each season follows a different true crime story set in a different era, but all of them takes place in and around the same fictional town of Minnesota.
The series premiered its first episode on April 15, 2014, and received critical acclaim from critics because of a stellar cast that includes, Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks, and Martin Freeman.
Moreover, the series won multiple awards in the same year of release, including the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding miniseries, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Casting.
Is Fargo on Netflix?
Fargo is not currently streaming for Netflix US subscribers, but available for subscribers in the UK, Canada, and Japan, as per streaming contract between Netflix and FX.
All four seasons used to be available on Netflix US till 2019, but they were removed in 2020 when the license expired.
The reason the license expired is due to split streaming rights between different platforms.
While the rights for Fargo are owned by MGM Television, different streaming platforms purchase exclusive licenses to host the content for a certain period of time.
Why is Fargo still on Netflix in other countries like Canada, the UK, and Japan?
This is because Netflix holds the current streaming licenses for Fargo in those regions.
Licenses are sold individually per country, which leads to inconsistencies in Netflix libraries across borders. The same goes with The Rookie series.
