Directed by Anjelica Huston from the scripts of Anne Meredith, Bastard Out of Carolina is a 1996 American drama film produced by Amanda DiGiulio for Showtime Networks.
The Emmy award winning film is based on the 1992 novel of the same name written by Dorothy Allison that talks about a girl child who endures sexual and physical abuse from her stepfather.

The film follows the story of Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright, a young girl growing up in a poverty-stricken home in Greenville, South Carolina. Glen is a cruel and abusive man who takes out his frustrations on his family. He is constantly hitting Anney and berating her. He also sexually abuses Bone, which is something that she keeps hidden from her mother.
Despite the abuse that she suffers at the hands of her father, Bone is a strong and determined young woman. She is determined to make something of herself and to get out of the poverty-ridden life that she has been born into.
