Drummer Boy (2026) is a historical action-musical from Angel Studios, starring Joel David Smallbone alongside a cast that includes The Office star Melora Hardin, Game of Thrones actor Iain Glen and Nashville favourite Charles Esten.
Set in 1775, the film follows two brothers forced onto opposite sides of the Revolutionary War, while an enslaved young woman fights for a freedom the emerging nation has yet to deliver. With original music, battlefield action and a Christmas message about forgiveness, it’s an unusual combination of historical drama and holiday musical.
Directed by brothers Ben Smallbone and Joel David Smallbone, and Joel also plays the lead. The film opens exclusively in US theaters on November 6, 2026, timed to land between America’s 250th anniversary year and the holiday season. Its tagline sums up the whole idea in three words: Forgiveness is revolutionary.
Here’s everything to know about the cast, story, songs, Irish filming locations and release plans.
About Drummer Boy (2026)
The year is 1775, and the American colonies are about to tear themselves away from the Crown. The Clem family is about to tear apart too.
Brothers Jeremiah and Benjamin Clem end up on opposite sides of the Revolutionary War. One follows the cause of independence and the other stays bound to the old order. Their parents, Nathaniel and Rachel, are caught in the crossfire. The story treats the conflict as more than politics: it’s a test of what each brother will become.

Running alongside the brothers’ story is Emmaline, an enslaved young woman searching for a freedom the new nation is loudly promising but not offering to her. That thread gives the film its sharpest edge. The film keeps asking what “liberty” means when the people declaring it still hold others in chains.
Over all of it sits music, carrying hope through battle and loss, and a Christmas theme of forgiveness. The war may decide a country, but forgiveness decides the family.

From Concert Stage to Battlefield: The Story Behind the Film
To understand Drummer Boy, you have to start with the band. for KING + COUNTRY is Australian-born brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, four-time Grammy winners in Christian pop. In 2020 they released the album A Drummer Boy Christmas. It grew into an annual arena tour and a 2024 concert film.
The film turns that Christmas concert into a full historical epic. The Smallbones have said the project was eight years in the making. They framed it around three timelines: a nation built on 250 years of independence, and a Christmas story that began more than 2,000 years ago.
It’s also a family business from top to bottom. Joel stars and co-directs, his brother Ben co-directs, and his brother Luke produces. A film about brothers, made by brothers. Screenwriter Richard L. Ramsey reunites with Joel after the 2024 Smallbone family drama Unsung Hero.
Angel Studios unveiled the film at CinemaCon in April 2026 and calls it the studio’s first live-action theatrical musical. Angel’s Brandon Purdie described it as a milestone for the company.
Even the band’s name fits. “For King and Country” was historically a British battle cry. Now the brothers have made a film where that exact loyalty is what splits a family in two.

Drummer Boy Songs and Music
This isn’t a war film with a soundtrack added on top. It’s a musical, and the songs carry the story. The music comes from for KING + COUNTRY, and the songs revealed so far include:
- “Same Blood” – a big ensemble battle number featuring Charles Esten.
- “Land Ho” – a hopeful song about reaching the New World.
- “Wildflower” – India Brown’s original song as Emmaline, released in October 2026.
Esten described the approach well: the rhythm of the scene drives the song, and the song drives the scene. Fans of the band can expect “Little Drummer Boy” themes to run through the score, given where all of this started.
Where was Drummer Boy filmed?
Drummer Boy was filmed in Ireland.
Variety reported in April 2026 that the production would start shooting in Ireland later that month. By May, the band confirmed on social media that cameras were rolling, sharing wardrobe-fitting footage of Joel in costume.
Charles Esten has said several scenes were shot north of Dublin. He added that the green, rolling landscape felt surprisingly like his home in Virginia, which tells you why it works as colonial America.
Ireland has become a go-to stand-in for 18th-century America. Angel Studios also shot Young Washington there, and Irish film outlets have described Drummer Boy as part of a trend of US-backed productions using Irish crews and locations to double for historical America. The crew list backs that up: cinematographer Cathal Watters and producer Macdara Kelleher are both key figures in the Irish industry.
The production moved fast. It entered post-production in July 2026 and was completed by September, just a few months from first shot to finished film.
We’ll update this section if the exact estates, villages or battlefields are confirmed. If you recognise a location from the trailer, tell us in the comments.
Where to watch Drummer Boy?
Drummer Boy opens exclusively in theaters across the US on November 6, 2026, through Angel Studios. Tickets are available through Angel’s official website and local cinema chains.
No streaming date has been announced. Angel’s past theatrical releases have usually moved to the studio’s own streaming platform some time after their cinema run, so that’s the most likely home later on. For now, the big screen is the only way to see it.

Is Drummer Boy based on a True Story?
Not directly. The Clem family is fictional. But the world around them is real: the American Revolution, the families it split between Patriots and Loyalists, and the enslaved people for whom the Declaration’s promise of liberty wasn’t extended.
Drummer boys were also real. Young musicians marched with armies, beating out signals and keeping soldiers in step. The film combines that history with the Christmas carol’s simple image of a boy offering the only gift he has.

Joel David Smallbone as Jeremiah Clem
Joel carries the film on three fronts: lead actor, co-director and the musical voice behind it. Pop fans know him as one half of for KING + COUNTRY. Film audiences may know him as Joseph’s father, King Herod, in Journey to Bethlehem, and from Unsung Hero, the film based on his own family’s move from Australia to America. Drummer Boy is his biggest swing yet as an actor-filmmaker.
Lucas Leach as Benjamin Clem
Lucas Leach plays Jeremiah’s brother, and the film calls their relationship its emotional engine. Every battle scene matters because these two brothers could end up facing each other across it. Leach previously appeared in Crookhaven.
India Brown as Emmaline
India Brown, known from Apple TV+’s Invasion, plays Emmaline, the enslaved woman whose search for freedom gives the film its moral weight. She also sings “Wildflower,” an original song from the film released ahead of the premiere.
Ioan Gruffudd and Melora Hardin as Nathaniel and Rachel Clem
The Clem parents are played by two very familiar faces. Ioan Gruffudd was Mr. Fantastic in Fantastic Four. He also starred in Amazing Grace, playing abolitionist William Wilberforce, which is a quietly fitting echo given Drummer Boy’s focus on slavery and freedom. Melora Hardin, forever Jan from The Office, plays Rachel, the mother watching her sons choose sides.
Charles Esten as Lord Balfour
This casting comes with a great backstory. Esten grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, playing at being George Washington among the town’s colonial landmarks. Here, he wears a British red coat.
He has said he didn’t play Balfour as a cartoon villain. Balfour is a man who loves his daughter, his land and his king, and his inability to forgive is what pulls him into darkness. As a Nashville star and Grand Ole Opry regular, Esten also sings in the film. He performs in “Same Blood,” a large sequence with marching soldiers, horses and battlefield action, and the film also features a song called “Land Ho.”
Iain Glen as Major John Ambrose
Ser Jorah Mormont himself. Iain Glen brings Game of Thrones gravitas to Major John Ambrose and gives the officer class real authority on screen.
Beverley Knight as Margaret
One of Britain’s great soul voices, Olivier Award winner Beverley Knight plays Margaret. Her scenes with India Brown’s Emmaline are a key part of the film’s look at who the Revolution’s promises left out.
Is Drummer Boy suitable for Kids?
It’s rated PG-13 for war violence and some bloody images. It’s a faith-friendly Christmas release, but it doesn’t shy away from battlefield brutality or a family being torn apart. It’s best for teens and up. Parents of younger fans of the band should watch the trailer first.
Is there a trailer?
Yes. Angel released the official trailer in late July 2026, followed by a full trailer push in early October. Co-director Ben Smallbone said the aim was to set the epic scale of a war against an emotional story of brothers at odds.
Bottom Line
Drummer Boy is a big swing: a faith-based studio’s first live-action musical, a Revolutionary War epic shot in Ireland, and a Christmas film that takes on slavery and the contradictions of America’s founding. It has Game of Thrones, The Office, Nashville and Fantastic Four veterans in one cast, and a band of brothers making a film about brothers.
Whether it becomes a holiday tradition or not, it’s one of the most ambitious things for KING + COUNTRY have tried. Bring tissues, and maybe earplugs for the cannon fire.
