Westworld is another dystopian sci-fi western TV series created and written by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy for HBO Entertainment and Warner Bros Television. The first season aired on 2 Oct 2016 on the original HBO Channel and renewed for a second, third, and fourth season followed in April 2018, March 2020, and June 2022.
Nolan also planned a fifth and final to conclude the series but it seems that HBO is not in the mood of producing it and give the series a proper ending. What is the series about?
Based on the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld sets in a futuristic and technologically advanced world populated by android hosts. In this fantasized world, high-paying guests are indulging in their wildest fantasies without any fear of retaliation from the hosts.
Season 1 focuses on Dr Robert Ford’s new Reverie date that helps some hosts to regain their consciousness of their previously erased memories. The season ends as the hosts learn to embrace feelings and Dolores shot Dr Ford in front of a huge crowd.
The revolution of Dolores continued in the next season when she murders other human guests of Ford and Delos employees standing in the park. Maeve also seeks her host daughter and escape to the Sublime. This season also ends with a glimpse of Dr Ford when William struggles with his human identity thinking himself as a host developed by Ford.
Season 3 introduces us to Rehoboam, an advanced AI system designed by Incite Inc who is planning to take the fight to its creator Engerraund Serac. Bernard is believed to be the man behind the West World massacre. So, he takes on a new identity to understand Dolores plans.
The fourth season shows that humanity has lost the bar and that’s because of the rising population of hosts. Charlotte take over the control over human generations through her bio-engineered virus that infected humans of a generation.
HBO canceled the fifth season with the principal cast receiving their pay. After the cancellation announcement, part of cuts were made at WBD following their merger with HBO. After that, the series was shopped around to free ad-supported streaming networks.
