The highly-anticipated Martin Scorsese film Killers of the Flower Moon has finally made its way to theaters after a long and winding road.
Based on David Grann’s best-selling book about the 1920s murders of wealthy Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma, the epic western film made its world premiere on May 20, 2023 at the Cannes Film Festival. It received a lengthy nine-minute standing ovation, indicating its awards potential.
Killers had its U.S. premiere a few months later on September 27 at Alice Tully Hall in New York City. None of the cast members were in attendance due to the ongoing 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, but the premiere still drew massive crowds eager for a first look.
The film was originally slated for a limited October 6 release before going wide on October 20 from backers Apple TV+ and Paramount Pictures. However, the limited outing was scrapped in favor of a global rollout on October 20.
The film has ruffled some feathers for its hefty 160-minute runtime, which has led some indie theaters to take matters into their own hands by inserting an intermission.
This was much to the chagrin of Paramount and Apple, who actively put a stop to it. But director Martin Scorsese and editor Thelma Schoonmaker have been vocal defenders of letting the story breathe.
After a long journey, the movie finally hits living rooms on December 5, when it becomes available on VOD platforms.
Is Killers of the Flower Moon on Netflix?
