Why Cape Town?
It has coastlines, mountains, forests, deserts, and massive studio facilities all within driving distance. That versatility makes it perfect for recreating multiple islands from the Grand Line without flying the cast across the world.
Filming also took place at Cape Town Film Studios, where enormous sets, including ships, harbors, and pirate towns, were built specifically for the series. And yes, the iconic pirate ships? Many of them were full-scale practical builds, not just CGI.

The Straw Hats’ next stop is Loguetown, the historic city where the Pirate King met his fate.This bustling port town is famous for one moment in pirate history: the execution of Gol D. Roger.It’s also where the “Great Pirate Era” officially began.For the live-action series, production designers recreated Loguetown with large harbor sets, narrow market streets, and a towering execution platform that mirrors the scene seen in Season 1.Expect plenty of chaos here — because Loguetown is where Luffy’s journey truly escalates.
Reverse Mountain – The Gateway to the Grand Line
Next comes one of the most mind-bending locations in the entire series: Reverse Mountain.Instead of flowing downward like normal rivers, the currents here flow upward, carrying ships up a massive mountain before dropping them into the Grand Line.The scene required heavy visual effects combined with massive water rigs built at Cape Town Film Studios.The result? One of the most visually ambitious sequences of the entire season.
Laboon – The Giant Whale of the Grand Line
If you think Reverse Mountain is strange, wait until the Straw Hats meet Laboon.Laboon is a gigantic whale who waits patiently at the entrance to the Grand Line — smashing his head into the mountain again and again.Despite his terrifying size, he’s actually incredibly gentle.In Season 2, Laboon is cared for by Crocus, the lighthouse keeper stationed at the Twin Cape.
Creating Laboon required advanced CGI combined with real ocean footage, giving the creature a believable sense of scale against the Straw Hats’ ship.Whisky Peak – The Pirate Party Town
At first glance, Whisky Peak looks like the friendliest island in the Grand Line.Pirates are welcomed with massive parties, endless drinks, and cheers from the locals.Sounds perfect, right?
Well… not exactly. This cactus-shaped island hides a very dangerous secret, and it quickly becomes one of the first true tests for the Straw Hat crew.
Production built the town with western-style architecture and dramatic desert rock formations, giving it a unique frontier-like atmosphere.Little Garden – A Prehistoric Nightmare
Things get truly wild when the Straw Hats arrive at Little Garden.This island feels like it’s stuck in the Jurassic period.Expect:
- Towering jungle trees
- Active volcanoes
- Roaming dinosaurs
And two legendary giants locked in a century-long duel.Those giants are Dorry and Brogy, two warriors who have been fighting for over 100 years.To recreate the island, filmmakers combined lush South African landscapes with heavy CGI dinosaurs – making Little Garden one of the most visually ambitious settings of the season.Drum Island – The Frozen Kingdom
Then comes the coldest destination in the Grand Line: Drum Island.Unlike the tropical islands seen earlier, this location is permanently locked in winter.The island features towering drum-shaped mountains, snowstorms, and the mysterious Drum Castle perched at the very top.According to co-showrunner Joe Tracz, the location was designed to feel similar to the haunting castles seen in Game of Thrones.In fact, the eerie castle setting has been described as the show’s “Winterfell moment.”
