Spiderhead is an American sci-fi thriller film directed by Top Gun Maverick director Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Based on a New Yorker’s short story from the collection Tenth of December by George Saunders, the film follows the future world where convicts are offered to volunteer as medical subjects to reduce their punishment period.

The film is produced by Christ Hemsworth, Eric Newman, Rhett Reese, Agnes Chu, Jeremy Steckler, Geneva Wasserman, Paul Wernick, and Tommy Harper under Grand Electric and The New Yorker Studios, the distribution rights are owned by the streaming giant Netflix.

Where was Spiderhead filmed?

Spiderhead was filmed throughout Queensland, Australia during Covid-19 pandemic in November 2020. Filming began in Nov 2020 but was delayed several times and finally wrapped up in January 2022.

The interior scenes were shot inside Gold Coast city of Darlington especially the production took place inside the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Center. Village Roadside Studios was used to film the scenes where medical subjects are getting treatment. It is one of the largest studio in the Southern Hemisphere located in Oxenford, Gold Coast.

As per sources, the film was originally planned to shoot within the US but the 38-year old lead actor Chris Hemsworth insisted to move the shooting to Australia as it was a COVID safe zone. At that time and also a AU$21.58M investment was shared by the Australian govt along with Netflix’s Pieces of Her that also shot in Australia.

Australia is quite popular shooting location for various Netflix films and TV shows. Outer Banks, Holey Moley, and Surviving Summer are some TV shows that were recently filmed inside Australia.

Is Spiderhead based on a true story?

The movie is based on the short story of a New York author Geroge Saunders that follows a prison warden Abnesti who tests behavior-altering drugs on inmates to make them more sexual, talkative, and wise.

Participation is nominally voluntary and the guinea pigs are interested in becoming a volunteer because the laboratory provides better facilities than any detention center.

Synopsis

One prisoner begins to question the purpose of emotion controlling drugs that he’s testing for the pharmaceutical genius. Will he able to get the answers of his questions or he will be crushed by the organization?

The movie is now streaming on Netflix right now since its official premiere on 17 June 2022.
