FILMING LOCATIONS

Where was Cape Fear filmed? Every Location from all three versions

Cape Fear began as a 1957 novel called The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. J. Lee Thompson adapted it into a film in 1962, with Gregory Peck as the Bowden patriarch and Robert Mitchum as the menacing Max Cady.

Martin Scorsese remade it in 1991, casting Robert De Niro in a performance so unsettling it earned him an Academy Award nomination. And in 2026, Apple TV brought the story back as a 10-episode limited series with Javier Bardem, Amy Adams, and Patrick Wilson, executive produced by both Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.

Each production filmed in a different set of real-world locations, none of which were the actual Cape Fear in North Carolina. Here is the full breakdown of where every version was shot.

All three are based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners. The story follows a dangerous man named Max Cady who gets out of prison and goes after the attorney he blames for putting him there. The Bowden family spends the whole story trying to survive him.

Where was Cape Fear (1962) filmed?

The 1962 original was filmed almost entirely in Savannah, Georgia, with some additional scenes shot on the California coast. Director J. Lee Thompson used Savannah’s Spanish moss-covered streets and colonial architecture to build a world that felt warm on the surface and deeply threatening underneath.

The contrast was the whole point. Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the South. Watching something this sinister unfold against those oak-lined squares made the threat feel even more real.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah carried the bulk of the film. Gregory Peck’s Max Cady walking toward the courthouse? That was filmed at Wright Square, right in the heart of downtown. The school where Cady stalks Nancy Bowden was the Armstrong Kessler Mansion at 447 Bull Street, a striking Italian Renaissance Revival building that was serving as Armstrong Junior College at the time.

Forsyth Park, the 30-acre park with the iconic fountain, shows up in the scene where Cady emerges from the trees and threatens Nancy. It is one of Savannah’s most recognizable spots, and it has appeared in nearly every major film shot in the city since.

The Isle of Hope Marina on West Bluff Drive was used for the dock scenes, where the Bowden family escapes to their houseboat. And the real Morgan’s Bridge Fish Camp, located near Morgans Bridge Road in Bloomingdale on the outskirts of Savannah, also appears in the film.

City Hall at 2 East Bay Street and Johnson Square, the oldest and largest of Savannah’s historic squares dating back to 1733, both appear in exterior scenes throughout the movie.

Some scenes were also shot along the California coast, including at Ventura Pier Beach. The old pier, originally built in 1872, doubled as a waterfront location for a fight scene. The interiors and studio shots were filmed at Universal Studios in California.

Where was Cape Fear (1991) Filmed?

Martin Scorsese’s remake is the version most people know. Robert De Niro plays Max Cady in a performance that still makes people uncomfortable. Nick Nolte is Sam Bowden. Juliette Lewis plays his daughter Danielle.

Cape Fear (1991) poster

The film was set in a fictional North Carolina town called New Essex, but it was shot in Florida and Georgia. Interestingly, both Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, the stars of the original 1962 film, appear in the remake in small cameo roles.

Principal photography ran from November 19, 1990 through March 17, 1991.

Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, Florida

Florida did most of the work in the 1991 version. The crew filmed extensively around Fort Lauderdale and its southern suburb of Dania, along I-95 north of Miami, and through the subtropical wilderness of the Everglades.

The fictional New Essex High School, where Cady’s deeply disturbing seduction of Danielle takes place, was actually Broward College at 3501 SW Davie Road in Davie, West Broward County.

The town of New Essex that appears in the film was Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, Florida. The ice cream store where scenes were filmed is the real-life Rainbo Cafe at 1909 Hollywood Boulevard, which still exists.

One of the film’s most skin-crawling moments, where Cady clings to the underside of the Bowden family’s car without anyone knowing, was shot at the Seminole Indian Truck Stop at 4690 Orange Drive in Weston.

The swamp scenes were filmed at John U. Lloyd State Park in Hollywood, Florida.

The Bowden house exterior was filmed at Grove Point Plantation on 2298 Grove Point Road in Savannah. The production chose this property for its lush, natural cover, which gave Cady the perfect place to watch the family without being seen. The house was torn down in 2003 and replaced by The Oaks at Hidden Harbour condominiums, though the surrounding area is still accessible.

California and England

The houseboat finale was one of the most complex scenes in the film to produce. A 90-foot water tank was built specifically for the sequence at the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California. Producer Barbara de Fina justified the cost by pointing out that building the tank meant not having to deal with real weather, real tides, or real alligators. That is a very good point.

Miniatures of the houseboat were filmed separately at H Stage, Shepperton Studios, in Shepperton, Surrey, England, during post-production.

Martin Scorsese also built a full interior set for the Bowden house because, as he explained at the time, so much of the film takes place inside it and he needed walls that could be removed for specific camera angles.

Where was Cape Fear (2026) filmed?

The 2026 Apple TV series is the most recent version of the story, and it is the biggest in scope. Javier Bardem plays Max Cady. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson play the Bowden couple, now reimagined as a married pair of attorneys named Anna and Tom.

Cape Fear 2026 Apple TV series

The series is set in Savannah, Georgia. Right from the first episode, a title card confirms the Bowdens live there. But like the two films before it, the show was not actually filmed where it is set.

Almost everything was shot in Georgia, with the production based out of Assembly Studios in Doraville, just outside Atlanta. Filming ran from April 30, 2025 through October 15, 2025.

The production used two code names during the shoot: “Peaches” and “Cape.” Not unusual for a high-profile series, but also a little on-brand for a show about a man who hides in plain sight.

Assembly Studios, Doraville

This is where the bulk of the series was made. Assembly Studios in Doraville, a suburb of Greater Atlanta, served as the main production base for all interior scenes. The facility has 19 sound stages and has become one of the most in-demand studio complexes in the American South.

The controlled environment gave the creative team the ability to build and shape the claustrophobic interiors that the show relies on. Most of the Bowden home scenes, the courtroom sequences, and other indoor locations were shot here.

StudioLocationWhat Was Filmed
Assembly StudiosDoraville, Greater Atlanta, GeorgiaAll major interior scenes

High Museum of Art, Atlanta

The production filmed a key gala scene at the High Museum of Art in Midtown Atlanta. The permit described it as a fundraising event for the wrongfully convicted, attended by Savannah elites. Crew and cast took over the museum for several days, with cameras rolling from Wednesday through Saturday. Some scenes were shot overnight.

The shoot required partial street closures along 16th Street, Arts Center Way, and 15th Street. Roughly 200 people were on site during peak filming days.

The High Museum’s grand, modernist interior gave the scene an imposing visual weight that suits the story. It is a building that communicates power, and power is what Cape Fear is ultimately about.

Lake Allatoona, Cherokee County

Water scenes and outdoor sequences were filmed at Lake Allatoona in Cherokee County, specifically around the Victoria Day Use Area. The location has a boat launch, a small beach, a fishing jetty, and picnic areas managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. During filming, the area was temporarily closed to the public.

The lake’s isolated feel and natural shoreline helped replicate the coastal and river environments that are central to the story, particularly the scenes involving water and open space where danger has nowhere to hide.

Each production filmed in a different set of real-world locations, none of which were the actual Cape Fear in North Carolina. Here is the full breakdown of where every version was shot.

Springvale Park, Little Five Points, Atlanta

Springvale Park in Atlanta’s Little Five Points neighborhood was used to stand in for a coastal park setting. The production reportedly added palm trees and other coastal elements to make the park read as a Southern seaside location rather than an urban Atlanta neighborhood. It is that kind of detail work that makes a Georgia park look convincingly like the Carolina coast.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah was used for exterior filming throughout the series. The city’s Spanish moss-covered trees, historic mansions, and cobblestone streets gave the production what no studio set could: the real texture of the South. Savannah’s look reinforced the illusion of a coastal North Carolina town without requiring anyone to leave Georgia.

Is Cape Fear a real place?

Yes, Cape Fear is a real place in North Carolina, about 30 miles south of Wilmington. The Cape Fear River runs through the region and empties into the Atlantic near the town of Southport.

The 1962 film was set in southeast Georgia, so filming in Savannah made geographic sense. The 1991 Scorsese remake moved the fictional setting north to a made-up North Carolina town called New Essex, but still filmed in Florida. The 2026 series is set explicitly in Savannah, which is consistent with the 1962 original but still shoots in Atlanta.

The honest answer is production logistics, tax incentives, and infrastructure motivated the producers to shoot the series in Atlanta and Georgia instead of shooting on location in North Carolina. Both states have both offered favorable conditions for major productions. North Carolina has its own film industry, but for these particular productions, the cameras never made it to the actual Cape Fear.
