Man on Fire is one of those stories that refuses to stay in one place. It started as a novel in 1980, became a film in 1987, got remade in 2004 with Denzel Washington in one of his most beloved performances, and now it is back again as a full Netflix series in 2026. The new version takes the same broken, dangerous man at the center of the story and gives him seven full episodes to fall apart and rebuild, with a brand new cast and a very different approach to the material.
Here is everything you need to know about Man on Fire on Netflix, from the plot and cast to the episode breakdown and what critics are saying.

The Story Behind the Series
Before there was the Netflix series, there was the book. And before the book, there was a very specific kind of thriller that changed what action fiction could be.
Man on Fire is an American action thriller television series based on the 1980 novel by A.J. Quinnell. This new adaptation would also incorporate elements from the follow-up novel, The Perfect Kill, published in 1992.

The novel introduced John Creasy, a former mercenary who takes a job protecting a young girl in Italy and ends up becoming the most dangerous man alive when that girl is taken from him. It was raw, violent, and unexpectedly emotional, with a bond between Creasy and the child at its center that hit readers much harder than the action sequences around it.
The story has now been told three times on screen. Man on Fire was first adapted as a film in 1987 and again in 2004, directed by Tony Scott and starring Denzel Washington. The 2004 version moved the action to Mexico City and became the version most audiences remember today, largely due to Washington’s performance and Tony Scott’s kinetic visual style.
The Netflix series is the first time the story has been told as a TV show, which allows it to stretch the character and the conspiracy into a much longer arc.
Full Cast of Man on Fire
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy
John Creasy is a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran from New Orleans, Louisiana. He struggles with PTSD and alcoholism. John gets framed in a terrorist attack while visiting Brazil.
When it came time to cast John Creasy, showrunner Kyle Killen knew Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was the man for the job. Killen explained: “The thing about Yahya is he can do everything. It’s not that I saw one thing and said, ‘That’s John Creasy.’ It’s that I saw his range, and realized, ‘That’s what John Creasy needs.'”
Abdul-Mateen is best known for his Emmy-winning performance in Watchmen and his roles in Aquaman and Ambulance. He also serves as an executive producer on Man on Fire.
Billie Boullet as Poe Rayburn
Boullet plays Poe Rayburn, a teenager growing at a rapid and confusing pace with the attitude that comes with it. Poe is unhappy about her parents’ decision to move to Brazil and spends her days with wealthy international classmates until a tragic incident changes her perspective on family and life. As the sole witness to a terrifying event, Poe quickly learns that her only real ally is John.
Alice Braga as Valeria Melo
Braga plays Valeria Melo, a professional driver with familial connections to a gang running a local favela. After Creasy hires Melo, she quickly becomes his right hand in protecting a young girl and pursuing the people behind the attack.
Alice Braga is a Brazilian actress best known internationally for City of God, I Am Legend, Elysium, and Queen of the South, where she played a lead role for five seasons.
Bobby Cannavale plays Henry Tappen, the friend who pulls Creasy toward Brazil with a new job offer, setting the entire story in motion. Cannavale is known for his roles in The Watcher, Boardwalk Empire, and Scarpetta.
Scoot McNairy as Henry Tappen
McNairy plays Henry Tappen, a CIA officer and military veteran who served with John in the past. Henry protects a secret while tracking Creasy’s movements throughout the season. McNairy won a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the ensemble cast of Argo and has appeared in Halt and Catch Fire, Narcos: Mexico, and True Detective.

Where Was Man on Fire Filmed?
Filming for Man on Fire began on October 15, 2024 and concluded on February 21, 2025. Shooting took place in Mexico, Brazil, and Italy, with the story itself set in Brazil.
Mexico City, Mexico is listed as one of the primary filming locations. This makes sense given the show’s opening sequence is set in Mexico before Creasy’s story moves to Brazil.
The show is set in Rio de Janeiro, and several sequences use real Brazilian locations to bring the favela streets, upscale neighborhoods, and waterfront areas of the city to life on screen.

How is Man on Fire Different from the 2004 Denzel Washington Film?
This is the first question any fan of the original is going to ask. Here is a clear side-by-side of how the two versions compare.
| Element | 2004 Film (Tony Scott) | 2026 Netflix Series |
| Lead actor | Denzel Washington | Yahya Abdul-Mateen II |
| Format | Feature film | 7-episode TV series |
| Setting | Mexico City | Rio de Janeiro, Brazil |
| The girl | Lupita “Pita” Ramos (age 10) | Poe Rayburn (teenager) |
| Creasy’s background | Former CIA | Special Forces / contractor |
| Based on | 1980 novel | 1980 novel and 1992 sequel |
| Mentor character | None | Valeria Melo (Alice Braga) |
| Story length | 2 hours | Roughly 6 hours across 7 episodes |
| Main villain | Mexican kidnapping ring | Political conspiracy and terrorism |
In the Netflix show, Creasy is a contractor for the CIA, while in the books he was a part of the French Foreign Legion. The show also moves the plot to Rio and changes the details of the attempted murder and kidnapping, making it a looser adaptation that draws on elements of both Quinnell novels.
The core structural shift is that instead of compressing Creasy’s trauma, bodyguard assignment, revenge mission, and political conspiracy into a film, Man on Fire 2026 stretches that arc across seven chapters. This gives the character more room to break, recover, and build a team around him.

Reviews: What Critics Are Saying?
Man on Fire has landed in a middle ground with critics. The show is performing extremely well with audiences, but professional critics have been more divided.
Rotten Tomatoes reported a 55% approval rating based on 20 critic reviews. Metacritic gave it a score of 62 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes came in at 75%, significantly higher than the critic score, showing that viewers are connecting with the show more than critics are.
Here is what different publications had to say.
What critics liked:
Variety noted that Abdul-Mateen and Boullet are fantastic in their roles, and that Creasy and Poe’s rapport is one of the highlights of the series.
IGN wrote that the show’s attempt to stand apart from previous adaptations counts for a lot, and that the basic thrills of an unsuspecting criminal network suffering the wrath of a man capable of matching their brutality remain intact.
BuddyTV noted that the series works best when it treats John Creasy as more than a violent instrument. Abdul-Mateen’s version is described as haunted, wounded, and still useful, and importantly, not invincible.
What critics were less happy about:
RogerEbert.com wrote that there are inklings of a more tender story focused on characters’ shared and individual traumas, but it is more often than not stifled by garish lighting, dull action sequences, and nonsensical political storylines.
Variety also noted that as the plot pushes toward the season finale, it becomes increasingly over-elaborate, siphoning attention from the emotional beats that would have elevated the show above standard action thriller fare.
IGN pointed out that the show can sometimes feel like it undermines itself in its attempts to feel distinct from previous adaptations, and called out a generic score and stylistic choices that drag it down at times.
The general critical consensus is that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s performance is the show’s strongest asset, and that the emotional core involving Creasy, Poe, and Valeria is compelling when the show slows down enough to let it breathe. The political conspiracy layer is where most critics feel the show loses its way.

How Man on Fire is performing on Netflix?
Whatever the critics think, audiences are showing up in big numbers.
Man on Fire is officially the number one series in the world on Netflix.
The show reached the number one title slot on Netflix in 46 countries by its second day of availability. That kind of global reach in such a short time puts it among Netflix’s biggest action launches of 2026.
Will there be a Season 2?
No official announcement has been made yet about Season 2, but the door is wide open.
Netflix’s Man on Fire remake is not treating John Creasy like a one-and-done action hero. The series uses all seven episodes to rebuild him as a damaged former Special Forces operative, then leaves him alive with unfinished business.
The show’s creative team has left things open enough for a second season. Given that the series takes creative license with both Quinnell novels, any potential Season 2 would likely continue to adapt elements loosely rather than following a specific book.
Given that it hit number one in 46 countries in its first two days, Netflix will almost certainly be looking at a renewal decision very soon. The viewership numbers are what drive those decisions, and Man on Fire is delivering them.
